This and That Saturday

Good morning, Sunshine! How are you doing on this fine September  Saturday?  Do you any  grand plans for the weekend?   Me?  Well I plan to jump in with both feet and see what the day allows. 😀 I am sure that includes family visits, a tad of quilting and bit of stitching. Hmmm should I include some chores in there? Naaah ! Hee! Hee!

It has been a very busy week here in the holler. In fact, Mr. Pinker and I have been keeping  a tight schedule running errands and going from here to there and everywhere.
The other day we went to a thrift store where I came home with a few thrifty finds including this darling needlepoint stocking. Now hold on to your bloomers! 👖      This was a dime!  A dime , I tell you! 😳  I was a little sad as I looked at all of the workmanship put into it.  I wondered: How could someone give this lovingly stitched piece away?  And  how come it was priced at just a dime?  🤔

Though we do not have a "Jacob " in the family I could not leave it behind. Do you have any suggestions on how I could cover up the name ? Or do you think I should leave it?  🤗

One evening, I gathered up lots of autumnal fabrics which included shirtings, homespun and whatever was smiling brightly at me in the quilt room.  Of course, I had a quilt in mind. 🍁🍂🍁🍂

Strips were cut and then subcut into 2 1/2" squares.

Soon  I was laying out the wee squares into a 16 patch block.

It was not long before I  had lots of pretty blocks .

My intention as of right now is to aim for a total of 42, but that may change.

14 blocks pieced

Well I  have a new storage container for my 2 1/2" squares, and it is straight out of the refrigerator.  Well not really , but this Walmart macaroni deli container sure is the perfect size to store those little squares . Miss Cheapo strikes again!  😂😄    I just may make a cute label for the top so no one gets confused as to what is in it. LOL. 😃😂

My newest cross stitch start is "Hello Pumpkin" which is a darling design sent to me by sweet Susan. A few more stitches on the letters and then I will be working on the pumpkin.  Thank you so much, Susan .🤗😘
"Hello Pumpkin" is a gift from Susan.

Golden rod is blooming along the fence lines. It is always one of my favorite late summer weedy blooms.

I guess I have rambled long enough- don't ya think?  I  wish you the bright and sunny day filled with love, laughter and lots of joy.

As always,

Happy Stitching and Quilting, y'all

Melisa

  1. Hi, what a nice post again. Well, I would leave the name on the stocking and tell everybody it's the snowmans' name.
I had a busy week too, my gardener was here and we did a lot of work in the garden. Work in the house called, I did a little and then shut the door. Have to stitch!
The new quilt already looks warm and cosy.
Have a lovely weekend and a busy needle.
    Hugs, Gabi

    1. Good afternoon, dear Gabi. What a great idea about the stocking- yes the snowman needs a name :) How wonderful to be able to spend time in the garden. The chores do seem to build up in the gardens don't they? It is so nice to hear that you have a gardener to help on some of the tasks. But isn't so nice to be able to go in and sit back and stitch. I hope you had a relaxing time working on your projects. Have a great weekend and thank you for the sweet visit. Hugs.

    1. Good afternoon, dear Mayte. It was surprising to see such a stocking at the thrift shop especially at that price. I can only imagine the hours that it took to work on this sweet piece. I do believe that is a great idea to leave it as is and preserve what the stitcher created. It is a precious piece. Thank you for the sweet visit and I wish you a great weekend. Hugs.

  3. Cute little Christmas stocking! Will it be difficult to unstitch it? Or just sew a cute patch on it? I like Gabi's idea, tell it's the name of the snowman ;) Your 16 patch blocksare very pretty, love these sweet colors! Thank you for sharing, and may your weekend be full of happiness, and stitches too ;)

    1. I just couldn't leave the stocking behind with all of the handwork put into it. I have never done needlepoint before. It is so pretty. I believe I like Gabi's idea too- just say it is the snowman's name. LOL. I am enjoying the 16 patches. I am working on more today. I hope you have a great day, Frederique and thank you for the sweet Saturday visit. . Happy quilting

  4. The quilt blocks are so autumn! I suggest you embroider the name you want on the stocking onto a piece of fabric then applique that onto the stocking. Or, you could just wait, maybe someday you'll have a Jacob in the family. Happy stitching!

    1. We just may have a "Jacob " in the family someday. LOL . I have never tried needlepoint before so embroidery would be a great fix like you said. It was such a sweet piece that I could not leave it behind . So many hours were put into it. Thank you so much for the sweet Saturday visit. I hope you have a great afternoon.

    1. I am really enjoying working on the 16 patches. They are quick blocks to work on when I just have a few minutes in the day. I think I am going to do just that on the snowman. The little jolly fella needs a name. LOL. Have a great weekend. Hugs.

  6. I vote don’t change it! I like the Gabi’s idea that it is the snowman’s name, and as such it’s a little bit of history that shouldn’t be lost! I’d guess you found it as a result of a house clearance, which is sad, but it’s lovely that you’ve rescued it and Jacob the snowman will now have a second life where he can be cared for, and loved once more. 😁👍🙋‍♀️ Looking forward to seeing more of your quilt. 🩷💜 Have a super happy day stitching. 🙋‍♀️ Hugs, Barbara @flashinscissors 😁👋😘🤗xx

    1. Happy Saturday, Barbara. I think with all of the warm encouragement that I will do just that and let this be Jacob the snowman's stocking:)). It bet it was a house clearing. I can not imagine getting rid of such a treasure, but I will love displaying it this winter season. Have a blessed weekend. Hugs and love.

  9. Good Morning! I have rescued a few things that I've seen at a thrift shop or at a yard sale. Makes me sad - but since my kids are like me (They rarely throw out/get rid of handmade stuff), things will be around forever! :-) Love your new quilt - colors are very fall-ish. Have a great weekend! Blessings!

    1. I am so glad to hear that you have rescued a few handmade pieces as well. I am always happy for the great price but sad for the maker of the piece who worked so hard on the piece. You sound like me Donna. It is wonderful that your children see the value in handwork as well. I know that just warms your heart. Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs.

  12. So much lovely eye candy! I have to assume the stocking was priced at a dime because it was personalized. What lovely stitching! I suppose if you want to use it personally you'll need to cover up the name. If you are planning on using it in one of your many tableaus, I'd just keep it because it adds to the charm of the scene. That's my two-cents! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

  16. I can’t tell you what to do with your stocking. I can share I have rescued stocking for years. When my husband and I were dating I would ask him does he want to be Robert or Charles? Our four—legged son, Decker, used an old felt stocking made for a dog named Flippy. I had bookshelves in the living room of our previous home and I would hang all of them all over. My husband bought a set at an antique mall that was Mom and Dad. He added I’m Dad from now on. Thank you for rescuing Jacob. Thank you So much for your wonderful posts. Bobbi

    1. Aaaaw what a sweet story, Bobbi. It just warms my heart to hear that you rescue needlework too and that you have a fondness for stockings. It is just so wonderful to use these stockings rather than letting them be thrown away. Years ago I saw a cross stitched stocking at the thrift store and did not get it . I immediately regretted it and went back the next day only to find that it was gone. It was the one that "got away" . LOL. So I definitely could not leave this one behind. I bet the Mom and Dad stockings are adorable ; what a treasure. Do you still hang them each year? We used to get our dogs Molly and Janie stockings too- such sweet memories. Thank you so much for sharing and bringing a smile to my day. Hugs and Blessings.

  17. My darling daughter-in-law’s childhood stocking was lost in her parents’ moves some years back. She has always felt left out that everyone else had a stocking that looked alike but her. When her grandmother downsized, her aunt gave her the stocking that was made for her dearly loved uncle who passed away when she was a child. It was a knitted stocking with his name knitted into the cuff. She asked me if there was any way I could put her name on it. I don’t knit but I can crochet so I crocheted a new cuff, cross stitched her name on it, and whipped stitched it over her uncle’s name. She was thrilled and said it made her feel so special knowing she has the only stocking connected to him. I think it would be so special if you put your sweet sister’s name on it and hung it on your mantle to celebrate her and your special bond at such a wonderful time of year.

    1. Aaaw I had never thought of that idea, Missy. You brought tears to my eyes- how sweet and thoughtful. My sister loved Christmas time and like to "do it up big time". She loved giving gifts, making treats and certainly had the giving spirit all year long. I love that idea. I am so very grateful for the idea. I loved hearing about your dear DIL and her lost stocking. It sounds like it was meant for her to receive her uncle's stocking.- what a treasure and to think of all of the loved ones including yourself who have made her "new stocking" special. I am sure she always looks forward to pulling it out each season. Have a blessed evening, Missy and thank you again. Hugs and warm Blessings.

    1. Happy Saturday, Terry. Isn't that stocking as cute as a button. There is one thrift store that has a huge dime table that I immediately go to. You never know what you will find in it, but this was the 1st time I found a piece of needlework. I also found a vintage french fry cutter and a small ironstone dish. You don't see many thrift stores have those prices any more. Have a fabulous evening and thank you for dropping by. Hugs.

  23. Those sixteen patch blocks are wonderfully Autumn. How big are you planning this quilt or is it a "make blocks til I get tired of making them"? I've been making them as L&E in 1.5"squares for quite a while for my gr'son #1's quilt. I like the title - Miss Cheapo. We must be related because I have a half dozen of those sort of containers stacked up with various quilt parts in them. LOL Your new thrift find is something special, for sure. The price is crazy! I have done several Christmas stockings. If you want or need a stocking for someone special, adding a framed and applique'd name tag would work or it will certainly be a lovely addition to holiday decor just as it is. I got up early this morning to go out and weed but it's 39+F out there. Whoa, Nelly! I have to wait a bit for it to warm up. Yes, I'm a wimp. LOL

I am debating on whether to make 42 blocks and add a sashing and border or make it bigger. I saw a quilt on Pinterest and am sorta copying it. Oh I had to giggle when you said that you are using the similar containers for storage. Hee! Hee! Not need to throw them away when we can find so many uses for them in the quilt room. LOL. I am hoping to work outside today too. I have to figure out some shelving for my wee greenhouse. Have a wonderful day, dear Ginny. Hugs.

  24. I have read some great ideas for the name on the 'fabulous find of the year' Christmas stocking. I love the idea of it being the snowman's name, and the idea to honor your sister too but I think she deserves her own made by you. I would add a tag of some sort with when, where and price when you found it. Something like "looking for Jacob - found ___, where____ Price ______-. attach with a rusty large pin to the front. I think that just honors it's history and story :) .....PS I loved the idea of a 16 patch with the fabrics, I was thinking a 9 patch with mine but I just might change it now. 1. Good afternoon, Sharon and Happy Sunday. I have loved receiving so many ideas from my sweet friends. Oh and I just love yours as well. Yes I do need to add an information tag. Aaah and how sweet "Looking for Jacob" That would be cute to add. I do like the idea of maintaining the history and is always fun to look back years on down the road. Eeeh I am so excited that you are working on a quilt. 9 patches are one of my all time favorite blocks. This is the first time that I have pieced a 16 patch before and it is going fairly quickly. I pieced 2 blocks today. I hope to cut more fabrics tomorrow. Keep me updated on what you decide to make. Have a wonderful afternoon and happy quilting. Hugs.
