Piecing Peppermint Pinwheels

 Howdy do, Honey Pies and a very Wonderful Wednesday to you! How are you doing on this lovely Fall day. Me? Well I am fine and dandy.  Do you know the ole' saying  "When the  cats away - the mice will play"? Well Mr. Pinker is out working so  I will have the whole day here to myself - quilting the day away . Imagine me with my arms filled with fabric as I swirl about in glee!  Though I will miss Mr. Pinker as he traipses out in the woods,  uninterrupted  quilting time is quite welcomed.

Yesterday I sat down to the sewing machine as Burl Ives serenaded me on the cd player .It was not long before he whisked me away to a winter wonderland filled with sleigh bells ringing and jingling, and the halls were being decked. 

Soon I was joined in-  singing "Fa la la la la la  la la la la..." as I cut my 2 1/2 strips.

Mr. Pinker broke my  concentration when he entered into the sewing room singing   "Fa La La La La ! La La La La!" in his booming voice. "  Whatcha' working on? " he asked

Tickled by his singing I chuckled  and then replied with a smile , " Well, I am whipping up a batch of Peppermint Pinwheels ."

"Hmmm sounds yummy! "  He looked down at my blocks that I had already laid out. "But that does not look like anything I would eat. Don't you already a gazillion  projects in the works? "

"I sure do! " I said merrily." What's wrong with a gazillion and one, " I reasoned.

"Not a thing, " he said as he smiled and  walked away humming a little Christmas diddy. "

 My Peppermint Pinwheels are going to measure 8 1/2" squared unfinished  ( 8 " finished). 

If you would like to make some of your own, here are the measurements I am using. ( I like to write them down here just in case I forget in the future. 🙄LOL)

CUTTING FOR 1 BLOCK

CUT 1- Red fabric  2 1/2" x 18 "

CUT 1- Green fabric  2 1/2" x 18 "

SEWING

1. Sew the red and green fabrics together using 1/4" seam allowance. Press. 

2. Subcut strips into 4 1/2" lengths. 

3. Layout block as shown  and piece. WAHLAH! A super simple block . 

If you are using scraps, just simply cut 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles for your block. You will need 4 of each color.

PEPPERMINT PINWHEELS RECIPE 
YIELDS : 18
 INGREDIENTS:

1 cup of softened butter

1 1/4 cup sugar

2 large eggs

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

3 cups of all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoons of baking powder 

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of peppermint extract

1 teaspoon of red food coloring

DIRECTIONS: 

🍪 1. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy ( about 3 to 4 minutes) , stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs , one at a time  and continue beating well. Add extracts and beat. 

🍪 2. In a medium bowl, whisk, flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture , beating until well combined. Divide dough in half , beat food coloring into one half of the dough. Wrap the dough in portions in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. 

🍪 3. Roll each piece of dough between sheets of parchment paper to form a rectangle around 11"x 9" and 1/4 " thick. Remove top pieces of parchment and stack dough on top of each other. Roll layered dough to 12" x 10" trim edges . Starting at one long side, tightly roll dough into a log using the parchment paper to help roll. Refrigerate for 1 hour. 

🍪 4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 

🍪 5 . Unwrap dough . Trim ends. Using a serrated knife, cut log into 2/3 inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on baking sheet. 

🍪 6. Bake until set - about 12-15 minutes. Place on cooling rack. Cool completely. 

       

OK back to the sewing machine I go! I have  at least 10 more blocks to piece  for the day.

Let's Get To Baking- Christmas Cookie Exchange Blog Hop

Put on your Santa hat and your favorite Christmas apron!  Come on in my sweetie pies ,and let's head to the kitchen!

 It's time to bake  some yummy to your tummy Toffee Pecan Bars!!  I'll grab the bowls. 

You  mix in the flour and sugar. There is a spoon on the counter just in case you want to get a sweet taste of the dough. You know I will be sneaking a taste. 😀😋🍪

Before we go on any further, I am so excited for today is my day to share in the Christmas Cookie Exchange hosted by  Carol at  Just Let Me Quilt. Several other ladies are joining in today's blog hop. So after visiting here how about popping in to visit them as well.

Alrighty!  Do you have the sugar and flour mixed? 

Oh my! I got ahead of myself- just chattering away and did not give you the measurements.😀 I do apologize. Well let's take a look at the recipe, shall we. 

HERE IS A RECIPE CARD FOR YOU TO GRAB THE IMAGE AND PRINT OFF IF YOU WOULD LIKE.

I also have  some blank  recipe card templates for your printing pleasure. Just grab the image. Resize it  if necessary and print on cardstock . Then you can go back and visit all of the ladies in the cookie exchange and get some fabulous  Christmas cookie recipes. 

OK. Let's get to mixing!!!!   The  batter looks so yummy already . Doesn't it? 

Now my recipe says it makes 3 dozen bars. I did not find that to be accurate unless you cut your bars into itty bitty bars. This recipe made a pan full which is more than enough for Mr Pinker and I and of course you too🤗😘.

While the bars are in the oven, grab a seat and let me show you the quilt I made for the cookie exchange. I am calling it Christmas Toffee Bars Quilt. 😂🙄🤣

 I decided a color palette of reds and browns would give a warm cozy feeling for not only Christmas but for other holidays as well. 

This quilt is as simple as can be to construct. The finished size for the block is just 3".

This is not a tutorial ,but I will share my measurements just in case you would like to make one for yourself . The FINISHED SIZE is 16 "x 19"

THESE ARE THE MEASUREMENTS FOR 1 RED BLOCK. ( You would use the same measurements to construct the brown blocks - just reverse the layout)

CUT 1- brown square 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"

CUT 2 - red squares 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"

CUT 2 red strips 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"

USING THE LAYOUT AS A GUIDE, SEW THE UNITS TOGETHER USING 1/4" SEAM ALLOWANCE

I created 10- red blocks and 10 brown blocks.

After piecing all of the blocks together, I added the borders. The long borders ( left and right ) measure 2 1/2" x 15 1/2". The top and bottom borders measure 2 1/2" x 16 1/2".

You smell that? !!! I think our bars are ready.  OH YUM! They are a bit hot so let me cool them off in the fridge .  

While we are waiting, I'll show you my quilt hanging on my old hoosier .Pretty cute -Don't ya' think?

The bars are ready!!!  Grab you a plate and a mug of milk and let's enjoy. 😋

Ok! They are not totally cooled off , but I just couldn't resist before digging in. They taste a bit like a pecan pie.

Carrots, Carrots and More Carrots

Happy Wednesday, Sugar Pies. Welcome. Come on in and grab ya' a cup of tea and some smack my lips , yummy to the tummy Carrot Cake Oatmeal Cookies. 

             

I have some more carrot pickin' finishes to share with you. 

First off my mini Carrot quilt. On a whim, I whipped this little baby up . 

              

I think it would look cute draped off the side of the hutch or even in a basket.

 Some of you know I have been on a carrot kick lately.

But wait I did not stop with the hutch , my foyer hosts a little carrot tree. And.......

       

A carrot quilt  is  in the mix of the Spring quilts which are draped over thrifted shutters. 

 

And.....

A carrot quilt is  on one of the doors.  

        

Oh boy, how many carrot quilts does one need? Hmmm I think 152 would be a  nice round number. LOL. 😂😄🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕

I also can not forget Beatrice the Bunny Stamp. I finished her last week . And what did she have in her cute little paws? You guessed it ! CARROTS . No descent bunny would be caught without their favorite healthy snack. 

I can not mention Beatrice without talking about Buford too. You may have seen him in A Basket of Spring. He has a little carrot too.  Lol I told you I was on a carrot kick.

 

Today I would like to share  a Carrot Trifle  or sometimes I call them cookies . I finish mine in round ornaments that look like cookies.  

I have a whole series of trifles. They all measure about the same - around   1 3/8 " on 14 count aida. Click here to visit my tutorial on finishing.

The trifles are just quick stitches . Great to tuck into tiered trays , finish as an ornament , use as scissor fobs, or give as gifts. 

Can you imagine this one stitched up as a gift , including your favorite carrot recipe. 

Speaking of recipes, I wanted to share my Carrot Cake  Oatmeal Cookie Recipe. 

CARROT CAKE OATMEAL COOKIES

YIELDS : 48 cookies

INGREDIENTS: 

3/4 cup of melted butter

3/4 cup of brown sugar

3/4 cup of white sugar

1 egg

1 cup of shredded carrots

1/4 cup of water

2 Tablespoons of grated orange zest

2 cups of rolled oats

2 cups of all purpose flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of  ground nutmeg

DIRECTIONS: 

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease baking sheets. 

2. In a large bowl place, add butter, brown sugar, white sugar and egg. Mix. Then add carrots, water, and orange zest. Mix. 

3. Add oats, flour, baking soda, salt , nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix . 

4. Drop by teaspoonful onto baking sheets about 2 inches apart. 

5. Bake in preheated oven until edges are set and golden, about 8-10 minutes. Cool on wire racks.

6. As an extra you might want to drizzle cream cheese over the top of the cookies.
