Gathering Snowflakes - A Winter Freebie

Good morning, y'all and a very lovely day to you! Are you gathering snowflakes yet? Hee! Hee!  No snowflakes in our neighborhood, yet!  Hmm I wonder if we will get much white fluffy stuff this year? I am not sure, but I have heard from various sources like a furry tailed squirrel  named Sandy that we just might have a cold winter.  Have you heard that old wives tale?  IF A SQUIRREL HAS A BUSHY TAIL EXPECT A COLD WINTER.  What do your squirrels say?

Granny always said check the persimmons. I did that last year.  The persimmon seeds showed snow in the forecast, but alas we just got a few flurries.

I have not checked in with the caterpillars yet. Have you?

OLD WIVES TALES FOR A SNOWY WINTER
❄1. The more black on a woolly bear caterpillar means a harsher winter.

2. If you see a pig gather sticks and leaves in the fall it is going to be a bad winter.

3. If the hornets or wasps build their nests higher than usual expect lots of snow.

4. If a spider builds a larger web than normal ,it is trying to catch more food for a rough winter season.

5.  If the mole holes are deeper than 2 1/2 feet, expect cold temperatures and snow.

Well gosh, I have not checked with any of these critters on the Winter Weather Forecast for 2024.  I guess I will just have to wait and see.

Do you know of  any other old wives' tales on predicting weather?

Oooh I think I am getting wrapped up into the winter spirit and with that being said let me show you my newest little stitch. It is called Gathering Snowflakes.

It is Baby Flake, and he is gathering snowflakes to place in his winter basket! What will he do with the snowflakes? Build a snowbuddy? Make snowcream? Gosh, I do not know , but he sure is a busy fella.

So what do you think of Baby Flake? I think he is as cute as a button.

Remember all of my designs are for personal use only. Please do not sell my designs, rename or rechart my designs for profit. Yes that has happened. 😔

Gathering Snowflakes is finished on a thrifted clip frame. I will use it in other finishes .

I  hope to work on a couple more snow stitches for the month of January but I will have to finish them when Mr. Pinker and I get back from our camping trip .  I will also be working on the next stitch in the "Gathering series" .

Thank you so much for the sweet winter visit. Enjoy your day and ...

As always...

Happy  Stitching and Quilting, y'all

  1. Oh my goodness, Melisa I love every old wives tale you mentioned. I'm sure there are lots more where they came from. Gathering Snowflakes is adorable. I'm itching to do lots of stitching but unfortunately my lighted magnified lamp decided to stop working on Christmas morning. Big Sigh! Hoping to have a needle in my hand some time Sunday. Please do a stitch or two for me. Darlene J

  4. I have heard some of the old wives' tales you mentioned, Melisa. I haven't see any squirrels lately so I am guessing there is a hawk in the area. Haven't seen any wooly caterpillars either. Your Gathering Snowflakes piece is adorable.

  5. I love your new snowman cross stitch - so cute!. I've heard a couple of these wives tales - my grandmother lived in the country in PA and swore by them. She used to say if the cows were lying down, the fishing was bad. Never said if she knew from experience or not. ;-) Blessings!

  6. We notice bugs sneaking into our house right before a cold snap, but I have to rely on the National Weather Service to predict snow - lol! I just wish we could get some flurries here in far north Texas, but seems like all the snow stays in Oklahoma. That's why I want to move back there! Baby Flake is just adorable. :)

  8. I've heard the one about the woolly bears. I learned that one from one of my home health patients! It seems our squirrels tails are always bushy, but I have not heard that one before. No snow here, just a lot of rain last night. Have a great weekend Melisa!

  9. Baby Flake is cute as can be, Melisa! Although we need some moisture here on the northern Front Range of Colorado, I'm perfectly happy just stitching snowflakes instead of experiencing them. Hope you're enjoying your camping trip and stitching away on fun new things!

  10. We have several snow storms forecast for next week. We'll see, sometimes the weather people get way to excited about the possibilities on that front. Have a wonderful camping trip!

  11. I like these sayings based on observation and experience.
The winters here are not as cold as they used to be.

  16. I've heard all of your weather predictors. My mom used to say that if the Mountain Ash tree had more than the usual amount of berries on it that year, it meant a harder winter was coming. Thank you for the new snowman stitch. So cute! I hope you are enjoying your time away. We are suppose to get some snow and colder weather later this week. I am hoping the snow comes before the real cold.

  19. Baby Flake is precious!! I am praying for snow here in NW GA. We're supposed to get 3+" of rain tonight, but no snow. I've seen a couple of really furry black caterpillars as well as gigantic spider webs, so fingers crossed!

  20. I hope you and Mr Pinker are having a great trip! Thank you for the cute pattern. I am stitching Winter Haul today and had to laugh because it has actually snowed here while I was stitching, although none settled. Looking forward to stitching this one too. 😁👍😘🤗 Barbara @flashinscissors. xx🙋‍♀️
