Well hello there ,Sweet Sunshine! Welcome! Please do come in and join me. Melva at Melva Loves Scraps has me reminiscing of days long ago with her Pieces of My Life SAL.
Over the weekend, I worked on Block 6 called "Hours" which Melva posted in her May 2, 2024 post.
I chose a pretty array of country prints for the Hours block.
Hmmm Hours? Melva asked how did you spend your hours as a youth? Chores , reading , TV, and playtime?
Can you guess how I spent my time? Yep playing school!!!!
I along with one of my sister would gather up our dolls and play school for hours on end.
We each had our own classroom of pupils who were quite studious. The only thing-- they were all named Annie or Andy. Hee! Hee! I loved my rag dolls.
Four pretty four patches waiting to be pieced into the Hours block.
We would pull out lots of old books that were gifted to us or found at yard sales.
And of course there was always Golden books for the pupils to read.
All of the units are ready to pieced together.
My sister and I were quick to make assignments. We even made our own grade cards for the raggedy students.
Well here are some of the students with the "Hours" Quilt block. Didn't it turn out just lovely?

This Sumit adding machine is my newest vintage thrifty find that I thought the youngins would love playing with. It is from the 1950's . The boys have already learned how to add and multiply on the machine! It is quite a clever piece.

Oh my Gosh, I think I must go on the attic to look for my kids toys. Fisher Price, what memories come up. School, hospital, etc., still all there but my kids are grown up. Well, in their Mom they have a toy lover. At Christmas time I built up the old merchandise store (called Mrs. Olsons' Merchandise from Little House on the Prairie) and the doll kitchen. We all have fun and it reminds me on my childhood.

Oh how fun, Gabi. I bet your mercantile was adorable at Christmas time. I just love Little House on the Prairie. I am a toy lover too and have saved not only my toys but my kiddos as well. They do bring back so many fond memories. My youngest grandson now asks me if I have any old toys for him to play with. LOL. He loves them which warms my heart. DeletePlaying school or store were my favorites. I had favorite dolls and lots of Golden Books to use playing school or store. Sadly, I don't have any of my childhood toys. I do have a small rocking chair I received from my grandmother for my first birthday and an adorable roll top desk I received from same grandmother for my 5th birthday. Trust me when I say they are OLD. LOL I can't imagine parting with them but one day I'm sure they will be gone. DarleneJ
ReplyDeleteOh what a treasure to have your childhood rocking chair and a roll top desk. I bet the desk is precious! I can imagine many hours of playtime was spent with the both of those. I wish I had my childhood rocking chair. I still remember the "ugly fabric cushions"- well that is what I thought at the time, but now I would like the fabric. Delete(Little Penpen) yes! I played school all the time too! My chalkboard was on a stand, but not an easel. I remember my mama gave me a birthday gift with a brown folder with a string to close it, an attendance and grade book, and new red pens . A great gift and a sweet memory!

My daughters inherited this habit from playing school too.

ReplyDeleteI agree, Brenda. I am very interested in the curriculum that is taught today and am a bit disappointed . I believe in reading, writing and arithmetic, and the study of American history and let's not forget the saying the Pledge of Allegiance. LOL. Thank you so much for the sweet visit . DeleteSo many things to see and what memories they brought up. I was more of a "housewifey/mommy type of little girl. I washed my stuffy children to death! LOL I still have the drying rack that mom let me use to hang them all up to dry. The cash register reminds me of playing store. As I got a little older Barbies were the thing and Barbie could be ANYTHING! My little GF and I had our Barbies travelling to some way out places like Mars & Jupiter & Saturn. Your Hours block is so pretty! All the colors are going to make such a nice quilt. Love the little primitive embroideries; especially the stick figure sampler. So sweet. BTW - what is the row of houses behind the cash register picture? That was intriguing to me. I hope you are getting a break from the heat. We are still in it. It's been in the 100's all week. Oh, I am not built for this heat.

My Nanny made Raggedy Ann dolls and so we loved playing with them as well.Oh yes and Barbie-loved her. We usually received 1 or 2 at Christmas time. Those little houses are on my windowsill . Hubby made them from leftover 2 x 4 's . I just painted them all different colors. I have already spotted some scraps of wood in his scrap pile for Christmas trees. Hee ! Hee! Oh my 100! We have received a bit of relief from the rain with spotty showers all week. It certainly has helped with watering the gardens. Thank you for the sweet visit . Hugs from the holler.

Alabama Beauty is coming along so well, I like a slow hand stitch to pass the evenings, it is beautiful, and the fabrics are so scrumptious.
As a child, my favorite was being the teacher to my 3 younger sisters! Yes, I had a great blackboard and all kinds of books. How else is a big sister of 6 years older to spend long spring summer and falls days!!! I wonder what my sisters thought of having a sister as a teacher?? Love your find of the register, great find. DeleteWhat a fun post, Melisa--definitely a trip down Memory Lane :) I was another who always "played school" growing up, both in our attic and on our big wrap-around porch. Of course I always wanted to be the teacher. Being the oldest usually ensured me of that job--ha ha! I still have the old Fisher Price Schoolhouse in the middle of your FP photo and my grandson loves to play with it when he's here. I'm so glad I kept some of my son's old FP toys and lots of great books so Mister B can now enjoy them :) Hope you have a wonderful day! ♥
