Four Patches and a Tomato Freebie

Over the last few days, I have been thumbing through a new cookbook. I know. I know . It is much easier and quicker to look up recipes on the Internet, but I do enjoy looking at a good ole' cookbook from time to time,  especially when it is a vintage one.🤗

Last week,  I picked up this cookbook called  Favorite Mormon Recipes Casseroles Edition  for a mere 50 cents.

It was published in 1962 and is choked full with not only casserole recipes but breads and sweets as well. The original owner placed check marks beside favorite recipes. Perhaps she prepared them or was going  to in the future.

I found several recipes that caught my eye.

FRESH TOMATO CASSEROLE

6 tomatoes ,sliced
1/2 tsp. of salt
1/8 tsp. of pepper
1/2 tsp. of celery salt
1 1/2 cups of grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup on onions, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups of crushed potato chips

DIRECTIONS : Place half of the tomato slices in a casserole dish; sprinkle with half of the seasonings. Top with half of the cheese and onion slices; repeat layers. Cover with crushed potato chips. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

I am sure I will find more yummies to prepare as I continue looking through this wonderful cookbook.

The other day, I finished a A Basket of Pincushions
into a a little pin pillow. The trim is yarn that I simply twisted and tacked  along the seams.

Since I finished one tomato stitch, it is time to start a new one( Hmmm ... Should that be my new rule for Spring and Summer stitching? Maybe. Hee! Hee!)

I am working on a simple stitch called "Tomatoes" . If you are interested in stitching it, just snatch the charts below . This is a CHOOSE YOUR OWN COLORS chart. I will certainly update this post as I decide on the colors. At this point , these are my thoughts on what colors I am going to use --

POSSIBLE FLOSS COLORS:

WORDS: DMC 3371
TOMATOES: 815 & 895
SPOOLS: 840 (wooden spool) 931 and 782 (threads)
NEEDLE and PINS- 413
DOOHICKEYS ( bottom border) 931

If I change my mind on the colors, I will let you know, but again choose whatever colors make your heart sing.

If you are interested in stitching this piece,  just grab , the images. For printing tips, refer to the post Tips for Printing which has loads of tips from my sweet friends.

A few weeks ago I told you about 9  four patches that I found sitting sad and forlorn in the "Quilt Nest. "   "Work on us?" they replied as I passed by. Gently , I scooped them up and went to the task at hand.

The four patches were made up of 1 1/2" squares ( unfinished).

I added 2 1/2" squares and strips (unfinished).

It was not long before I added the borders which measured 3 1/2" wide (unfinished). The little four patches were quite gleeful to be made into a wee quilt.
Today this little quilt will go into a hoop.

Do you like to make little quilts? If so,  do you decorate with them?

In the works: "Where the Strawberries Grow"
Oh gosh, I have been chatting your ears off. Please do forgive me. I know you have  much to  do, and I do not want to keep you too long . I so appreciate that you stopped by to visit me today. If you are in the neighborhood tomorrow , please stop by. We can enjoy some coffee as we chat about Summer stitching and a little bit of this and that.  I wish you the most delightful day!

I will be decorating with strawberries today.
As Always,

Happy  Stitching and Quilting, y'all

Melisa

Thank you for the sweet visit.

  1. I used to collect cookbooks but sadly they went bye-bye 8 years ago. My cooking, when it happens, is very, very simple so there's very little need for a cookbook. The 'tomatoes' must be stitched very soon. Very, very cute, Miz Melisa. Yes, I do enjoy little quilts and find myself doing them often. Ironically, I have a pile waiting to be quilted but x-stitching took a serious front seat several months ago so the pile of unquilted little quilt sits and waits. Today I found a pile of blocks for a much larger quilt, so I've decided to employ my seam ripper and make a much smaller quilt. Have a terrific Monday! Lots of hugs, DarleneJ

    1. Good afternoon, dear Darlene. There is nothing wrong with simple cooking- sounds perfectly fine to me. We are the same way. Since the kiddos are grown and gone there is no need for big meals and the grandkids are so picky . LOL. Oh I remember that you were on a Cross stitching roll at the first of the year. I do the same thing - sometimes want to stitch and sometimes want to work on just quilts. I bet you will have those found blocks taken apart and made into a cutie patootie quilt in no time. Happy happy piecing. Hugs.

  3. Good Morning my friend! You really keep us knee high in cross stitching! Thank you so much! I do love little quilts but sadly no place to hang them and even if I stitched a bunch, no one would want them as their tastes run so differently. However, I understand those little critters calling to you to be used - the unfinished blocks I mean. I have bunches of those and I really need to do something with them. So much sewing, quilting and cross stitching to do and so little time! Blessings!

    1. Good morning, dear Donna . I hope your week is off to a good start. Oh I completely understand about small quilts. I keep hoping that my girls will be interested in mine someday. Hmmm Maybe ? Fingers crossed. LOL. I seem to find forlorn blocks in my quilting room all the time. Goodness, why do I do that to myself? LOL Well at least I took care of 9 four patch blocks. Thank you for the sweet Monday visit and have a wonderful week. Hugs.

  4. I just love paging through old vintage cookbooks too!! I especially like guild ones and church ladies' ones--great recipes can be found for sure...
Love the tomatoes x-stitch --so neat, Melisa...
I have got to switch over to smaller quilts--but I kind of am at a loss as to how to decorate with them--other than table toppers etc. they are such a fun make as they are a quick finish...

    1. Oh church and organizational cookbooks are some of my favorites too. I love seeing who submitted the recipe and where they are from. Don't you? I use my little quilts as table toppers, rolled up in baskets and crocks. Wall space is at a premium here so only a few are lucky enough to find a spot on the walls. LOL. Thank you for the sweet visit, Julierose. Warm hugs.

    1. PS: Though the hubs does most of the cooking and what I do cook is kind of made up in my head(!!), I do love looking through vintage cookbooks. I have one of my mom's I love.

    2. Happy Monday, Brenda. My mom has always been good about coming up with recipes and creating tasty dishes. My hubby can do the same thing. Me? Well I am not that talented. LOL. If I make something that we really like, then I usually write the recipe in my own notebook and write notes for it. As far as quilts, I am amazed by all that you get accomplished throughout the year. Your quilts are gorgeous, Brenda. Thank you for the sweet visit. Hugs.

  8. There is nothing more fun than thumbing through one of those wonderful vintage cookbooks, they are absolute treasures! 1962 was the year I started "dating" my husband, and we were both in the high school band which put out a band cookbook. I still have it and cherish it.
Your little quilt is beautiful, how kind of you to respond to their pleas to be used!

    1. Oh what a treasure to have the band cookout when you and your hubby were in school. So y'all were high school sweethearts? How sweet. I bet you have some favorite recipes from the cookbook. When my hubby and I got married, my MIL hosted a bridal shower where the attendants were asked to bring recipes. I still have those and cook from those treasured cards often. Thank you for bringing a smile to my day, Linda. Hugs.

  15. Thank you for the sweet Tomatoes stitch. I noticed the needle & thread stitch along side your stitch in progress. I made one of those into a pincushion for a friend. How perfect was it that you had 9 nine patches. Worked great for the little quilt you put together. I will think of you with my coffee tomorrow morning. I saved the tomato recipe. Sounds like a good one for this summer when i have tomatoes coming out of my ears.
