Canning Season Summer Stamp- A Summer Freebie

 Good morning, Sunshine and welcome.

One of my bright beautiful zinnias.

Canning season is upon us. Soon some of us will be pulling out our mason jars, lids and spices. We will be gathering fruits and vegetables and will be spending many hours laboring away in the kitchen, savoring the summer's harvest. In fact , some of you may have already began putting up preserves , tomatoes and such.

Our garden is a little late this year. But the blackberries are beginning to ripen.

We are still waiting on the blueberries, but soon the vines and bushes will be filled with delectable berries .

Do you like to can ? We usually can tomatoes, zucchini, squash, pickles, relish, jalapenos and fruits for jams and butters. Our pantry looks mighty  nice come winter time.

The little red pot holder is my newest find from an estate sale. So precious

Blueberry and Apple Butter Recipe  From the vintage Ball Blue book published in 1932

Use tart apples. Remove stems but do not pare apples. Cook in sufficient water to cover, until soft and press through a strainer. Use equal parts of berries and apple pulp and 1/2 as much sugar as fruit. Cook the butter until it is thick and clear . Seal immediately in hot , clean Ball jars.

 Tomato Marmalade
From 1932 Ball Blue Book
1 quart ripe tomatoes
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup sugar.
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon mixed spices
To 1 quart ripe tomatoes, skinned and sliced, add 1/2 cup cider vinegar, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon mixed spices. Cook mixture slowly until it is thick , stirring to prevent burning. Pack into clean, hot Ball jars. Seal immediately.

Canning Season  is the 9th stamp in the Summer Stamp SAL.

Canning Season was stitched using 10 DMC floss colors including: Blanc,  782, 815,  898, 930, 926, 3052,  3345, 3346,  3799 .

It is hard to believe that the Summer Stamp SAL is nearing an end. Goodness, I have had a lot of fun. I hope those who have joined me have enjoyed it too. But wait! We still have 1 more stamp- the Bonus Stamp which I will share next week. And then I will share the final reveal of the sampler finished with all of the little pillows.

Well Sweeties, I best get out to the garden. It is not as lush and pretty as last year- so I will spare you the photos. Hee! Hee! But hey, maybe you would like to join me as I  hoe out the weeds in the wee okra patch? !😉😀 I have plenty of hoes, plus we could whip that chore out  in 2 shakes of a lamb's tail. Hee! Hee!  Hmmm any takers? ( I think staying in and stitching sounds way more fun. How about you? )

Have a beautiful day.

As Always...

  1. Have lots of fun and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Our garden is fairly large with a lovely orchard, as well. Ron thoroughly enjoyed our garden but now I have to work alone. It's not to far and we call it our grocery store. LOL Take care and enjoy giggles. Big Tomato Hugs DarleneJ

    1. LOL I did some "grocery store gardening" yesterday. Hee! Hee! Nothing wrong with that- . Right? If my garden doesn't pick up soon, that is where my fruits and veggies will continue coming from all summer long. I did pick a few chili peppers yesterday. Thank you for the giggles Miss Darlene. You always brighten my day. Super Big Hugs .

  3. Happy heavenly birthday to Amy 🩵 So young! 🥲 I'm thinking of your family.
I've never attempted canning but some day I might. I'm in a very busy season of my life (young child, work, etc) but I have lots of plans for when I'm less busy 😅
Thank you for sharing your talents with us as always. 🥰 Take good care of yourself! Hugs and love from Maine,

  4. Your summer sampler couldn't be any cuter! I helped my mom can as a younster that was enough canning for me. I only do freezer jam as an adult;)

    1. Oooh freezer jam is the bomb! We used to make strawberry freezer jam all of the time. It did not last long for it was a favorite. Hmmm I wonder if I could make blueberry freezer jam- maybe. Thank you so much for bringing back a warm memory, Vicki and for the sweet visit. Have a beautiful day. Hugs.

  6. This is the perfect stamp to fill the final spot! I canned a lot (mostly tomatoes) when we lived on acreage and had a big garden in south Texas. I bought an electric canner that sat on the counter top in my small kitchen, and it was wonderful. I sold the canner before we moved here in 2020. I miss it!
Was your sister a June baby too? That is the best month to be born IMO. :)

    1. Happy Tuesday, Linda. It sounds like you had an amazing garden. Tomatoes is always a favorite to can; you can use them in anything- soups, stews, salsas and whatnot. I bet you do miss having your canner. I am going to have to check in out the electric canners. I do have a Ball jam maker and my bread machine supposed to make jams , but I have not tried it. Oh yes, Amo was a June baby. Are you a June baby too? Yep a great month to born indeed. Have a beautiful day, sweet friend. Hugs.

  8. Very fitting to end with the canning stamp for the summer stamp along! Growing up we canned and froze all summer as things came in. Since marrying and leaving the farm I haven't done much except some tomatoes when I worked in home health. There was a little stand and he would have tomatoes that were very ripe and I'd get them at a great price. Mom and I made Vidalia Tomato Relish one year. I wish I still had that recipe. It was SOOO good and especially on black eyed peas during the winter! Fond memories. Thanks for sharing your talent with us Melisa. Have an awesome week. Hugs, B

    1. Aaw such warm summer time memories, Brenda. I have never had Vidalia Tomato Relish that does sound yummy. Vidalias are my Mom's favorite onion. I am going to have to do some research to see if I can find a recipe. Years and years ago, all kinds of farmers would pull up their trucks on the side of the road and sell their harvest. Nowadays there are not as many farmers in this area and the roadside truck veggie stands are rare to see. Thank you for the sweet visit, Brenda. I wish you a wonderful week too. Hugs.

I am so honored that you will be taking along this little sampler to work on . I hope you enjoy each and every stamp. Mmmm a pantry filled with home canned tomatoes sounds amazing! I bet they are yummy. I have dried beans ready to can but have yet to do that . I do need to get on that. You have a safe and wonderful trip and thank you for the sweet visit. Hugs.

  10. Melisa, I can't think of anyone I know that cans anymore, except you! Have you made that tomato marmalade? What do you suppose "1 tsp mixed spices" means? Just pondering that... I love your cross stitch.

    1. Aaaw thank you so much, Nancy. I picked up canning years ago when my girls were young and still love doing it each summer even if I just can a few tomatoes or what not. I haven't made the Tomato Marmalade but I thought it sounded so interesting. I researched some similar recipes that used ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. I would love to try to make some if I had a bounty of tomatoes. Thank you for the sweet visit . I wish you a lovely day. Hugs.

My Grand-mere and one of my Father's sisters canned every year--we all got together--such fun...I, myself, have never canned--[other than trying to make jam that ended up like rock candy!!Ooops!!]. ;)))) I miss pickles from my Grand-mere the most...

  12. Your zinnia is so pretty, Melisa! I am always so impressed with people who know how to can and do it with produce from their own garden. The cute canning jars are the perfect stamp design for a summer sampler! I can't believe we're up to #9 - I am finishing #6, so have a bit more to do. Thanks for sharing all of these with us!

    1. Oh thank you so much, Diann. My zinnias are just beginning to bloom. I have some years where we have a good garden and lots of canning and other years not. I was hoping for a good garden this year, but it is not looking that way. Maybe things will turn around though. I look forward to seeing your Summer Stamp Sampler update soon. It is such a joy to see your piece. It looks amazing. I hope you are having a good get away. Hugs.

  13. You summer SAL is cuter with each passing week! That canning jar stamp is one I can identify with! It seemed we canned from spring until late fall. . .asparagus was one of the early efforts and pears were one of the later efforts. Now, we don't each much of the sweet stuff and it is cheaper to buy beans/corn either in the freezer or canned good section than grow and can it!

    1. Oh yes, I hear you on it is cheaper to buy it than grow it. Still I try my hand at growing and canning each year though-some years better than others. I bet your pantry was filled to the brim years ago. I have never tried canning asparagus. I am going to have to try that next year. I love to make pear butter. Yum Yum! Thank you for the sweet visit, Terry. I wish you a lovely evening. Hugs.

And now I better hurry finishing this SAL, I am behind but I will enjoy summer vacations soon because I work at a school and I will be able to do this one, the Fall one and start the Halloween one, Yay! 15. The Summer SAL has been so much fun. Canning Season brings back wonderful memories of the women in my family getting together to can the fruits and vegetables from their gardens. I have enjoyed all of the stamps in the seasonal SALs. Thanks for sharing your talents. My small garden contains perennials, but this year a watermelon and a zucchini plant are growing LOL - they must be a gift from the birds that visit I can’t wait for the barbs. Have a wonderful day. Do keep me posted on how the watermelon and zucchini do. Every time I try to grow watermelon, the deer or bunnies get into them. LOL. It would be nice if you do get a good harvest of both. Have a great evening. Hugs.

  17. Thank you for the newest stamp. Canning and freezing is definitely part of most summers for me. The stamp is just so cute! Not this year, unfortunately. I really want to get outside and weed (Boy, I never thought I'd ever say that!) My gardens and flower beds are a mess. Soon, I will attempt it and that will be a happy day.

I hope to get a little something out of my efforts, but right now my garden looks mighty poor. LOL. Warm hugs and blessings.
