A Bad Day with Behulah

"Today is the day!" I shouted .

These blocks measure 8 1/2" squared unfinished.

I was as excited as a kid in a candy store for I was going to finish piecing my Peppermint Pinwheels quilt which has been in the works for a few weeks. Well that is what I had in mind. But .... Behulah my Brother sewing machine had something else in mind...

"We are going to get to work, sweet Behulah," I said as I patted her arm.

" Grrrrr," she moaned.

I busily worked on cutting 2 " inner border strips from my green Santa fabric which was a gift from my sweet nephew that he gave me two short years ago .

Then I cut  4 1/2" strips from the red polka dot fabric for the outer border. While I was busy cutting away, Behulah sat on the table unamused as to what was in store for her.

As soon as the cutting was done, I turned to Behulah and said with a smile,  "Here we are! Are you ready to get busy? "

I flipped the "ON " switch  and Behulah sighed with a big "Hmmmpph"

" What's up Buttercup?" I inquired.

But she said nary a word.    I soon began to try to sew, but Miss Behulah was not having it.

"Grumble Grumble, Clankity Clankity," she rattled. I knew she was not in a good mood, and I could feel the tug of the needle . I peeked underneath the fabric and saw the bobbin thread was all tangled.

" Now Miss Behulah, I just cleaned you the other day, " I said.

Again silence. So I changed out the bobbin, changed the thread and gave her a little pat .

"Are you good, girl? " I asked. Again silence. So I shrugged my shoulders and tried to sew the inner border for the second time.

"Clankity Clankity, Clank" went Behulah!

"EEEK! " I screached when the needle broke!  I rummaged through my cabinet and found another needle.

"Come on , girl, " I pleaded with Behulah.

" Grumble , Grumble, Snap! " said Behulah as she broke the 2nd needle.

"Double EEEEK! " I screamed. Now I would be fibbing if I said I was as cool as a cucumber at this point.  But I gathered my wits all ten of them  and calmly said" Well, Behulah, you have had a good run. Maybe it is time to put you out to pasture. "

From the corner of my eye, I could see Behulah quiver. "What are you saying? " she asked.

"Aaah nothing other than there may be another  place for you. "

Behulah had heard the stories of where the other naughty sewing machines go- down to the cold and dusty garage to sit all alone forever and ever - long forgotten.

"I don't want to go there. " she replied.

"Hmmmpph " I replied. I looked out the window over the hill.

Behulah then screamed,  "NO NOT THERE! NOT JUNK YARD HILL!" she pleaded.

I smiled and winked at her.  Two can play at this game I thought.  Junk yard hill is a place on the farm where some junk goes . Most farms around here have one for old equipment and such.

"I will give you one more chance," I told Behulah. Quietly, I picked her up and took her downstairs and explained the situation to Mr. Pinker. Mr. Pinker then looked her over and found where a piece of metal had came loose in the bobbin case. He gave her some tender love and care and then returned her to me to test.

Miss Behulah began to hum and buzzed right along . I gave her a pat. "No Junkyard Hill today, Behulah. "

Wow ! What should have taken just a couple of hours took all day long. I will finish up Peppermint Pinwheels today.  That is if Behulah does not get her "bobbin panties" in a wad.

Have you ever had to give your sewing machine a good talking to? Hee! Hee!  I hope your machine is not as ornery as  Miss Behulah.

Have a beautiful day, Sweet friends and thank you for dropping by.

As Always...

Happy  Stitching and Quilting,

 y'all

  1. Oh, my goodness, Miss Behulah and Miss Molly (like Good Golly Miss Molly) almost met the same fate. Last week I had some similar issues with Miss Molly and after dealing with her antics and a few words with my sweet hubby she decided to straighten herself up, dusted herself off, etc and we were suddenly back in business. She finally figured out who actually was in charge. LOL Haven't done much sewing since that late night but when I have, she's been humming right along.

I fully understood what you were dealing with. Glad you're back in business, as well. The Peppermint Pinwheels quilt is adorable, wonderful, cute, sweet, etc.
Have a fabulous and productive Wednesday. Big Hugs, DarleneJ

    1. Oh my, Miss Molly was acting up too! Now what has gotten into these gals. Hee! Hee! It's a conspiracy I tell ya'. LOL. I am glad you were able to wrangle her in place. It is no fun when they act up like that is it? I was quite exhausted after the round about with Miss Behulah. Hopefully, she will be a good girl today. Hee! Hee! Have a great day, dear Darlene and keep Miss Molly straight. Big Bear Hugs

  2. I am glad Mr. Pinker was able to get Miss Behulah working again for you, Melisa. But you had me chuckling about junk yard hill! Our neighbor had his own junk yard hill, but it was more like a meadow. Hope you get the rest of your Peppermint Pinwheels together today!

    1. LOL It was a humdinger of a day working with Miss Behulah. Thankfully hubby was able to calm her down. Thankfully our junkyard hill is not visible. It is where equipment is parted out before leaving for recycling. A great place for me to find rusty treasures every now and then for the garden too. Hee! Hee! Have a blessed day. Hugs.

  3. So happy hubby was able to "doctor and heal" Behulah - machines can be so stubborn. I have a Baby Lock that has a gremlin. No amount of cleaning and fixing has been able to take care of it. But we've kept it anyway - the gremlin doesn't eat much and seems to be happy. I also have a feather weight named Ellie, after my mom who learned to sew on it. I wonder if the Baby Lock is angry because it has no name? Why is yours named Behulah?

    1. Wheew! I was sweating it, Donna. I was at my wits end with Behulah. I am so grateful that Mr. Pinker is pretty handy when it comes to repairs. LOL I had to giggle that your Baby Lock has a gremlin. It made me think of Gizmo and Spike. I hope it doesn't act up too often. Hmm you may be right. Maybe a name would settle it down. I love that you named your featherweight after your mom and what a treasure to have it. I named mine after a distant great aunt. I hope you have had a great day. Hugs.

  4. This was the best thing to go with my morning coffee 🤣 I had a dress form that kept falling apart, she was to the point she had more duc tape than anything else,I always threaten her with "to the curb" with you, finally the day came ,into a garbage bag she went screaming all the way to the curb🤣

    1. LOL How funny! Sounds like she was well loved and used. She had a good run like my old Behulah . Right? Hee! Hee! I bet it was a little hard to send her to the curb after having her for so long, but sometimes we know when it is time to put them out to pasture. Thank you for the sweet giggles, Helen. You reminded me that I have a dress form that needs some tender loving care too. Hee! Hee! Have a blessed day. Hugs.

  5. Yes! I've been there with numerouse machines. I was convinced it was all a conspiracy and it put me off sewing for many years until I could get a decent machine. Glad Beulah recovered. I know she has been busy and hopefully will continue to be sew.

    1. Oh gosh, Betty. I know what you mean about those ornery machines! It seems like mine always wants to mess up when I am really excited about starting a project or on the last leg of finishing a project. I do think it is a conspiracy too. Hee! Hee! Behulah played nicely today. So we were both happy campers . Have a blessed day. Hugs.

  6. So glad to hear that Beulah got straightened out for you ;))) Mr. Pinker deserves a hug for fixing her up so well;))) . Loving your Peppermint Pinwheels...great fabrics in there. I am looking at my STILL overflowing Christmas bin [even after 3 quilts, tabletoppers and 2 buntings!!!] and Iam going to make some crazy blocks I think with all the trimmings...a good 3 big bagsful...yikes.
Have fun sewing the rest of this week hugs, Julierose

    1. Oh I am so fortunate and Behulah is too that Mr. Pinker was able to fix her. Gosh, Julierose, doesn't it seem that no matter how much of our Christmas fabric we use, it seems to multiply before our eyes. Oooh crazy quilt blocks would be fabulous and a lot of fun. I cannot wait to see what you have in store. Have a great time planning your new project. Warm hugs and Happy sewing.

  7. Oh my! Miss Behulah really tested the limits. I'm glad Mr. Pinker got her straightened out and she missed going to the junk pile. Your border fabrics are going to work well with the pinwheels. You'll have a finish in no time.

    1. LOL Miss Behulah sure did test my patience. I am so thankful that hubby could whip her into shape. She was fine and dandy today. I had thought about buying some more fabric for the borders , but I was good and just used my stash. LOL. Happy quilting, Jeanna. Hugs.

  8. I couple of months ago my Necchi sewing machine lost the on/off switch. I was told by the repair guy it couldn't be fixed. So my machine I have used for 11 years sits in the corner and I have to use my $99 Target singer machine. Not fun!!!

    1. Aaaaw how disheartening . It is frustrating when your favorite machine is no longer in working order. It is too bad it cannot be repaired, Marilyn especially since you have had it that long. Hopefully your Target machine will do well by you until you decide whether you want to invest in a new one or not. Have a blessed day . Hugs.

    2. Is this one of the wonderful old Necchi machines, or one of the newer plastic case models? If one of the old ones, I'm going to say the repair guy doesn't want to bother, especially if finding the part might take some searching. Check out Victorian Sweatshop forum - lots of wonderful people whose hobby is vintage & antique machines. They might have advice on it.

  9. No, I don't talk to my sewing machine. Iam stressed when I am behind it, so I srldom use it.

  10. good morning beautiful Melisa.
aw!!! Miss Beulah had a mind of her own this morning, but Mr. Pinker taught her a thing or two. I am so happy Miss Beulah decided to pull up her big girl panties and play nice.
How are you doing on the Peppermint Pinwheels quilt? I haven't been sewing for so long. I don't even know if I'll remember how. with all the things going on in my life right now i just don't have the energy to quilt, however, quilting could just be my psychiatrist. i can take all my aggressions out on fabric into the machine and when i'm done i'll have something very beautiful to enjoy.
i hope Miss Behulah behaves herself the rest of the day. I'm sure she's as happy as a clam to have all her parts moving along smoothly.
I need to take my husband to the dermatologist today he is getting a squamous cell carcinoma removed from his arm today. you know what - my life certainly isn't boring. i just wish i had one day to stay in my jammies and have absolutely nothing to do. that would be heaven, but where is the fun in all that. ugh!!! smile, smile
have a wonderful, blessed day Melisa.
blessings and love are on the way to you. hugs.

    1. Good afternoon, dear Debra and Happy Wednesday. Oh, I do hope your dear hubby is doing fine after the removal of the carcinoma. Hopefully, he is not in too much pain or discomfort. I wish him a very speedy recovery. You are one busy busy bee, but I am sure your family is so grateful that you are there for them. Yes, I do need a day all to yourself where you can do anything your sweet heart desires. Time at the sewing machine would be like Calgon ( Aaaw take me away! ) Do you remember that commercial? LOL I may be dating myself. Hee! Hee! Well Miss Behulah behaved perfectly today and Peppermint Pinwheels is pieced and ready for her photo shoot. It was a good day indeed. Sending you lots of hugs and many blessings. Have a wonderful evening, sweet friend.

Those threads can get into a lot of nooks and crannies can't they? Though I had already cleaned Behulah , Mr. Pinker gave her another cleaning.I am so glad to hear your machine is back into working order and it was not anything too serious. Have a blessed day, Terry. Hugs.

  16. I've used a sewing machine once in my life and it didn't really go very well. Glad you got the old gal to working again. Quilters here who need service on their Brother machines have to wait for a repair guy to come from another country as there is no one around here that knows how to fix them. Crazy.

    1. LOL it can be a learning experience using the sewing machine especially these newfangled machines. That is so interesting about having to wait for a repairman . I am sure that can be quite frustrating for those who like to do a lot of machine sewing. Thank you for the sweet visit, Tammy. Hugs.

  19. The border choices on the Peppermint Pinwheel quilt will finish it off perfectly. Oh, yes! I don't know any quilter who hasn't had an issue with their mechanized baby. My normal machine, Marion, has chosen a couple of very bad times to have a hissy fit and mess up a deadline on a project. Then I'd have to pull out my old Singer 99, Bertha, to finish up whatever I was doing while one or the other had to go to the "spa". I have to know the story about your machine's name. Very old and very Southern, I'd say. Tell us, please.

  20. It's never a good thing when your sewing machine has any ills at all. So glad it was easily fixable. You picked some fun fabrics for the borders. Looking forward to seeing this one all finished.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm sorry you had a machine issue. Those are so upsetting! I do have one slightly modern (25 years old) machine which has a computer in it, but it cost me $900 to fix when the board failed. I am so fond of my manual hand crank and treadle machines for that reason. They will "live" for several more centuries and sew beautifully with just a little oil for maintenance. I do sew on my Featherweights when I need to go more quickly than my old arms can. I am so glad you were able to get your machine back in order without a trip to the dump! That must have been such a relief! I can hardly wait to see your finished quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL! Why does it always happen when we are on a mission!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've put my machines in timeout many times. Turn it off, go do something else, come back and all is well again. Whatever was wrong is no longer a problem when I come back. But given that it's usually me not getting the thread in the tension workings correctly, I'm not sure if the machine is in time-out or if I am.

  24. With two broken needles, I'd be a complete panic! I love how you talk to your machine, and how Mr. Pinker can fix her. Good ol' Behulah. Not ready for the junk yard yet! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.
