"Oh, BUTTERSCOTCH!" I exclaimed with a furrow brow.
Mr. Pinker quickly looked up.
"What happened, Hon? What is wrong?"
"Ooops! I did it again!" I said as I eyed my iron ladened with fusible webbing. "DOUBLE BUTTERSCOTCH!" I shrieked.
Mr. Pinker immediately bounced from his chair. "I'm outa here. This means trouble," he said with a smile. As he excited the room, he shouted over his shoulder, " Do you need any help?"
"Nope! I got this. It is me or the highway for this sticky fusible webbing, and it is not going to be me! Hee! Hee! " I chuckled.
I made a mistake I got fusible webbing on my iron. Eeek!
"Hmmm, Think! Think! Think! What did I do the last time I did this?" I asked myself.
I searched the world wide web for solutions. Hmmm - the dryer sheet method. "Yep ! That is what I did the last time!" I said to no one in particular.
I ran to the laundry room and grabbed few Bounce dryer sheets and some paper towels.
Soon I was ready to tackle the task at hand. First step- heat up the iron to a low/ medium heat- no steam. Check! ✅ I then began to tackle the melted fusible in small circular motions with a dryer sheet.
Time to get to work and try to remove the residue.
"Around and around , I go", I sang. "Ouch! Eeek! Ouch! Watch those fingertips! " I reminded myself.
As I worked, Miss Iron said "Squeak! Squeak! ." I smiled for I knew she was quite happy that the residue was getting thinner and thinner . Her plate was shining up.
Slowly but surely the gunk is coming off.
" Mama's sorry. You are ok, Baby, " I reassured Miss Iron. " I will get you all cleaned up. "
Miss Iron again squeaked, "Thank you, Mama . " She sighed in relief.
What was so special about Miss Iron that I wanted to save her? Well not so long ago, she was a poor lonely orphan Sunbeam iron , sitting all alone on a dusty shelf at the thrift store . She was as happy as a clam when I popped her in my buggy and brought her home to live out her lifelong dream of pressing pretty quilting fabrics. Of course she has gone through some hard knocks, and it shows, but that is ok. She is well loved. ❤
Slowly but surely the gunk was coming off, but it was a process of patience, perseverance and a whole lot of elbow grease. It took about 8 dryer sheets. I would have to cut the iron off for a few minutes and then start back to the task at hand, mainly to give myself a rest.
Afterwards, I wiped the iron down with a paper towel to remove any leftover residue from the webbing and dryer sheets.
Miss Iron is back in business and so am I ! Now back to finishing my projects!
Has this ever happened to you? Do you have any tips on how to clean the iron plate? I am quite curious. You know me- being Mrs. Scatterbrain running at lightning speed- well, this may happen again but Shhh don't tell Miss Iron. 😀😁😂
Thank you for the sweet visit, y'all and have a blessed day.
As Always...
Happy Stitching and Quilting,
y'all
Melisa

Oh no, oh no a Christmas pressing debacle!!!! I wish I had a secret family secret to help but alas I do not. I do have a little advice - slow down!!!! LOL Wait I just thought of stuff called Iron Clean I believe I got at WalMart - I seem to remember that worked like a charm.
ReplyDeleteHappy, happy Tuesday with big, big hugs!!! DarleneJ
LOL another debacle indeed. Hee! Hee! Oooh I will have to check out Iron Clean. I am sure we will be making a trip to Wally World this week. I need to keep that in my sewing room. You never know when a mishap will happen again. LOL. Happy Happy Tuesday Miss Darlene. Have an awesome day and thank you for the advice. Big ole' hugs.
DeleteGlad you saved Miss Iron. Funny about the mister... when my husband sees me with my stitch ripper in hand hanging over a quilt on the long arm frame, he seems to cut his visits short. LOL. Business is business. Gotta stay on task. Glad your dryer sheets worked.
ReplyDeleteI think we've all had that happen at one time or another - I know I have - plenty of times. I had some kind of scratch pad that did not scratch things when using it and I used it on my iron. I wish I could remember the name of it. Will have to check out the iron clean at wally world today. I do know Aldi sells some kind of scratch pad that doesn't leave marks. Haven't bought or tried it. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteDuring Dark Ages home ec we learned to sprinkle a little salt in a protected baking pan, warm the iron slightly, and then iron the salt which removed the offensive stuff! And sure cheaper than dryer sheets!! Lol
ReplyDeleteTry using a wadded up piece of wax paper - removes sticky stuff wonderfully! Move the warm iron over the wax paper.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to get Miss Iron all cleaned up. Happy Tuesday, Melisa!
ReplyDeletejajaja madre mía cuanto me divierto!!!! es imposible no sonreír con tus historias amiga Meli. So sorry! I do believe we've all done that at some point...I know I have! I don't remember what I used but as I was cleaning out a drawer in the studio the other day I found some little tubes of Iron Clean or Clean Iron (can't remember!) that I purchased back when Hancock's was still in business. I think I've used Magic Eraser once too. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get Miss Iron all cleaned up. Have a great day! Hugs, B
ReplyDeleteI don't have an iron cleaning technique, but catching up on your posts and I spied something in your last post (yes, my house has a black hole where things hide in). It's the gingerbread that has the peppermints on the bottom. Have you posted that one before? I can't seem to find it. It's adorable (as all of your designs are)!
ReplyDeleteHi Melisa! I keep a box of Walmart's cheapie dryer sheets under my ironing tabletop just for that purpose! It has been the best solution for me. I have been on the lookout for a vintage iron. I know my Oliso will mess up at some point, and I'm not buying another one. I'd love to have an old one with no holes and that gets very hot, so I'll keep looking.
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at Mr Pinker saying I'm outta here - lol!
Poor Miss Iron - I'm so glad you figured out that the dryer sheets will clean the fusible off! I didn't know that would work, but have certainly gotten gunk on my iron before, too. I can't remember how I cleaned it off, though. Maybe with steel wool? Glad there are always dryer sheets in the house in case of emergencies!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hate when that happens. I have an older ironing board and when I do the sheets with the iron, I set it at the edge and over the side. A few good presses on that corner angle with the sheets and the gunk is off. I meant to ask yesterday, do you store anything in the cookie jars?
ReplyDeleteFirst, when it comes to fusibles I try to keep a pressing sheet/parchment paper or teflon sheet at hand. I put the fabric between the pressing sheet and then press. Yes, it takes some time; but. . .less time than if you "get" to clean your iron! Yesterday, I was pressing a fabric scrap and discovered to my horror, there was a thin strip of fusible on the fabric edge. The fabric came from a friend. I had a mess on my iron! I did just as you did and in no time at all the fusible residue was out of there!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteMy mom always said to get a brown paper bag and salt out. Run the warm iron over the salt on the paper bag. It has worked every time.
ReplyDeletegood morning sweet Melisa.
ReplyDeleteyour mishap has happened to me also, but i didn't know the trick about a dryer sheet. i'll have to remember that. my problem is i sew and iron, sew and iron and in between the sew/iron sessions my iron turns off. i hate that. i want to find a good old time iron that stays consistently "on". it is such a pain to get up to iron a piece and the iron has cooled. i think i'll hit up the thrift shops - you seem to have such good luck with your findings. i'm going to give it a go.
we are starting to see cooler weather, however, next week it's supposed to get to the low 70's. i can handle that. the cooler nights of 43 degrees are my favorite. getting into my warm jammies and under my fleece blankie in my comfy chair - ahhhhh heaven.
i do have quilts on the bed. the fleece blanket just seems to do the trick when i'm sitting in my comfy chair and eating kettle corn. yum!!!
i hope you have an awesome day and that Miss Iron doesn't experience any more sticky mishaps. it is going to be a wonderful day in California.
blessings and love are on the way to you.
Debra Broyles
These mishaps are more common than you think, but it's so frustrating when they happen!
ReplyDeleteLuckily, you've sorted it out perfectly. Hugs from Seville.
This happened to me over the weekend. I was making little Christmas trees with woven material and thought using a fusible interfacing would help stabilize the fabric and keep the walnut shells from coming out. Yep, put the iron down on the wrong side of the fusible. I didn't have dryer sheets so I just kept ironing over a towel....not recommended! I'm glad you had a solution and Miss Iron is back in business.
