Tales from the Quilt Keeper- Grandma Annie's Quilt

Hello there sweetie pies. It's the spookiest month of the year!! Happy October!

Well since the days seem to fly by when we reach this time of the year, I thought I would  give you the holiday countdown !🗓 Put blinders on if you do not want to see . Eeeh! 

🎃30 days until Halloween

🦃54 days until

Thanksgiving 

🎅 85 days until Christmas. 

I have been busy bustling about the house these last few days; taking down some of the Autumn decor and replacing it with Halloween.  That includes changing out the quilts. 

Last month I told you about gifting my oldest grandson my queen sized bed which was in the guest bedroom. It held several quilts and when I spotted  Great Grandma Annie's quilt, I just knew it would be perfect to hang on The Quilt Keeper  for the month of October.  Such warm oranges and reds. 

This quilt is very special.  If you have followed me for awhile , you have met my Great Grandma Annie through my stitching and you have even seen her furniture like the buffet which is usually in my header. 

 

 

You may remember looking through her sewing basket when I shared Grandma Annie's Sewing Basket in July for Needle and Thread Day.  And of course she has been in many other stitches. 

 

Great Grandma Annie was the mother of 3 boys and 3 girls one of which passed away as a child.  I never met my great grandma, but knowing her children I can imagine how loving and funny she must have been for my grandmother and aunt were a hoot!  

Annie was very thrifty as evident by the quilt. The fabrics appear to be feedsacks - perhaps she had used these fabrics to make clothes or aprons and these were the scraps that she strip pieced into lovely Lemoyne Stars. Aren't the fabrics  so yummy ?  

I do  know this quilt was made before 1953 which was when Great Grandma Annie gained her angel wings.

 The backing was pieced from white 100 lb chicken scratch feed bags. You can faintly see the print .

 

Annie quilted  the sashing and borders in simple straight lines about 1 1/2" apart and she quilted  rays of stitching in the lemonye stars. 

The quilting thread was rather thick. I wondered if she used feedsack threads or the threads that she saved from the handle factory to quilt it. ( I will have to show you the crocheted bedspread sometime made from those threads . Wow, it is gorgeous) 

 I think this quilt is in pretty good condition considering its age. I imagine this quilt kept the chill off my grandmother on those cool October nights.  

I think Grandma Annie's binding was unusual. On the sides she turned the red border fabric over to the back but on the top and bottom of the quilt she turned the backing fabric to the front and sewed it down.  Quite interesting.

And a very good morning to you.  Today I would like to share with you "an oldie but goodie" quilt that I purchased years ago at a thrift store for only $2.99 .🤯 Can't beat that with a stick; can you? 

I call this "The Sunflower Quilt" ( Wow! Real creative name. huh)🙄😂 

Well anywhoo! This is the quilt that I am displaying for Sunflower September on The Quilt Keeper  .

AN UPDATE FOR THE QUILT SHARED LAST MONTH:

 Dear Sylvia from  Treadlestitches blog  left me a message giving me a bit of information about the quilt. The design is called  "All Kinds" and was published in the Ladies Art Company Caltalog in the 1890's. She said she believed my quilt may date that far back as well based on the fabrics. Eeeh ! How exciting. And think it came right off the truck!

NOW BACK TO THE SUNFLOWER QUILT  

A few years ago I made my weekly rounds to the Goodwill. The linen section is in back corner ; I always make a beeline to that section as soon as I enter the store.

 Well I was jumping like a mad woman when I saw this hand quilted Dresden Plate quilt . I swear people were rolling their eyes , pointing and laughing at me as I whooped and hee hawed over this quilt, but I didn't care not one single bit. 

 Do you think it was made in the 70's or 80's ? I am just guessing based on the fabrics .

Just 5 fabrics were used in this quilt. The fabrics are a little dingy and faded , but oh so loved.  Isn't the block so pretty?

 The plates are machine appliqued with green thread , but the quilt is hand quilted.

 I am always interested in how quilters do their binding.  The quilter used a bronzed colored fabric for the backing and turned the backing fabric towards the front to bind the quilt. 

 To hang the quilt on The Quilt Keeper   , I folded it  in thirds and placed it on the bar. 

The bar is removable for easy hanging.  

Next month around the first , I will be sharing a very special quilt with you on "The Tales from the Quilt Keeper" .  

Now to other happenings. 

My kitchen tiered tray is crammed full with fall goodness including sunflowers.

    

 This tiered tray is beside my corner sink near the window. I added some scarecrows, chickens, pumpkins and barns and called er' done. 

 I know. I know.🤷🎃🌻🍁🦉🐔 Its plumb full with clutter, but I am enjoying it. 

The Pioneer Woman utensil container holds a lot of my Granny's old utensils- some are rusty and crusty but they are for display only and are dear to my heart. 

                      

That's my ramble for the day.

What's on the Quilt Keeper - Straight off the Truck

Good morning, ya'll and Happy Friday.  Come on in , and grab you a cup of tea. Today , I have a goodie to show you , a tale and a quilt  all in one post! 😀🧵📚

Ya'll I have been moving quilts around and many of ya'll know that I just love to display them everywhere. I have them tucked in  in crocks, on shutters, on the wall , draped  from furniture and even hung on doors- just everywhere. 

Well my newest quilty  goodie is The Quilt Keeper .  

The Quilt Keeper was designed by  Ellen Taurins and fits nicely over the door . It is sturdy and is well made. It comes  with foam padding that you cut to adhere to the brackets so they can fit snuggley against the door and they do not scratch your door as well.  ( I love that!) . Now as  as soon as I got mine , I ripped open the box and was ready to find the perfect quilt to put on display.   

Hmmm !Which one should it be I thought?   

As I was pondering , I walked through my kitchen  to get a snack when it hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew the perfect quilt that I wanted to display on it. 

But before I show you the quilt, let me tell you a story about it.  Oh, my what a tale this quilt has. 

A while back Mr. Pinker had brought in a truck load of furniture from his family.  

He called me ahead of time and said, "Guess what ?" 

"What?", I asked unamused. 😏

"Momma gave us Granny's old pie safe, " said Mr. Pinker

"EEeeeh ! " I squealed in sheer delight.  An antique plus it is a display piece for more  country clutter.😀😂 I was jumping up and down  with excitement like a crazy woman who had won the grand prize in a pie eating contest. 

About an hour and a half later , Mr. Pinker drove up ,and the truck was loaded down. But by golly,  as soon as I saw the truck pulling in the driveway. I went into full crisis mode!!!!

"What in the world! " I exclaimed as I came running out the door  in sheer panic.😱😳

What got my attention was an old quilt that had traveled right out in the elements for almost 90 miles wrapped  and tied around the old pie safe.  

Mr. Pinker had barely got parked when I jumped on the back of the truck like a bandit and began trying to untie the ropes to no avail.

 "Quick! Get me some scissors, STAT! We have a quilt that needs rescuing" .  

Mr. Pinker rolled his eyes and looked at me like I lost my mind as he opened the tailgate.  My nimble fingers pulled and tugged. Soon the ropes were released. I  quickly and gingerly  took the quilt in the house  for fluffing and evaluation. 

"Whewww!! All is well! , " I  yelled out the door. "The quilt made it through. "

Mr. Pinker  sighed and said , "Good to know!" 🤷😏

I then realized I forgot the pie safe. How could I do that?  Well in my defense there was a quilt in distress. Wouldn't you do the same?

Anywhoo....So I ran outside and saw the most glorious old pie safe.  I was over the moon. 

   

"Thank you , honey!  I love it !!!  But next time put the quilt in the front of the truck and wrap the furniture in something else. " 

"Yes, dear. " Mr. Pinker said with a smile.💑

So to make a long story short, that is what I decided to hang on The Quilt Keeper - the quilt that I named "Straight Off the Truck". 

I am not sure how old this quilt is , but it is an oldie. It is hand quilted in the Baptist Fan Pattern and is very heavy.  Do you know what the quilt block is called?  I would love to know. 

Now back to The Quilt Keeper. 

It is very easy to display or store your quilt on The Quilt Keeper. Just fold your quilt and drape it  over the removable bar.  

   

Hang it back on the hooks. 

And then you can sit back and enjoy your handy work or like me a quilt that you have rescued.
