Let's Dye Some Fabric

 Fabric ✅

Salt ✅

Rit dye ✅

Hot water ✅

Welcome y'all. What am I doing? Well messin and gommin' as my Nanny would say.😁😀

Actually today I am going to dye a small piece of 14 count Aida , and I thought I would  take you along with me and share how I  do it. But before we begin,  please, oh please. I beg of you . Do not call the cross stitch or "fabric dyeing " police on me.  This might not be the right way , but it is my way of dyeing fabric, and I have been pleased as punch through the years on how my fabrics have turned out.

Alrighty, let's get started . Shall we?

Remember when you are messin' and gommin' , cover your work area to protect it from the dye or any spills. Plastic gloves are handy to protect your hands from dye stains as well.

I dyed the fabric Lemon Yellow for the Summer SAL. You can see the marbled effect from scrunching the fabric.  Oh bother, the little dark smudge is dirt from the garden. I will get that out shortly.

First off, let's look at the dye that I am using.  I am using a liquid All Purpose Rit dye which is good for fabrics such as cotton, wool, nylon, linen and silk.  I usually buy mine at Walmart.

This bottle of dye has been well used.

Now let's talk about the salt. The salt is supposed to intensify the colors and help with the dye absorption . The general rule is 1 cup of salt for 3 gallons of water or 1 lb of fabric or one part salt to 16 parts water.  But I am not dyeing that much. I just have this little bitty piece of fabric . So what do I do? Well I eyeball it! Remember, I have told you in the past that I fly by the seat of my pants. My philosophy is "If I don't like the results, I can redye it or dye another piece of fabric. "

Now what about the water?  Well you want it to be hot at 140 degrees or higher.

Now let's dye a small batch of  Aida. I will be dyeing my fabric in a pickle jar. Sometimes I use a milk jug that I have cut the top off of.

🌞1. Heat up your water. I heated mine in the microwave. Be careful. It is hot !

🌞2. Dissolve the salt in the water.

Water is heated. Time to add the salt. I am eye balling it for a small batch.

🌞 3. Shake your Rit dye before you begin. Add the dye to your "dyeing"  container .I start off with a couple of cap fulls.
Then add your dissolved salt water to your container. ( To be honest I do not add much water to begin with.)

I used 2 cap fulls to dye my small piece of fabric.
I did not add much water. I will add more after I add my fabric  if it needs more to be submerged.

🌞 4. The fabric that I am dyeing today measures 12" x 18".    I wet my fabric and then .I scrunch and wad  it  because I like "marbled or splotchy" effect that is sometimes  created while dyeing.  Immerse your fabric into the dye. If there is not enough dye water to cover the fabric, carefully add more salt water.

I wet my fabric and scrunch it before adding it to the dyeing jar.

🌞5. I use a wooden skewer to stir my fabric around. Then I let it sit.  Ever so often I check the intensity of the color. For example, I do not let my gray fabrics sit in the dye too long because I just want a light gray .

Using a skewer to stir my fabric.

To test your dye before immersing your fabric, you may want to take a small snippet and place it in the dye beforehand. If the dye is too bright or intense, add more water. If it is not intense enough add more dye. I would start with just a cap full and see how it goes.  I leave my fabric in the dye from 10 minutes up to an hour or longer.  I often pull the fabric out and check the color. Remember that it will dry lighter than what is shown.
Once  I think that the color is to my liking, I pull it out of the dye. Now this is a judgement call based on how you want your fabric to look.
Rinse the fabric in cool water until the water runs clear.

I hang my fabric out to dry. If the fabric is not dark enough , I return it to the dye bath after adding more of the color.
Hanging fabric outside to dry.

The fabric is dyed , pressed and ready to be stitched on.

So that is how I dye my fabrics.

As always, I encourage you to have fun, do research and dye your fabric to your liking using your favorite method. It is all about the enjoyment and the experience of living and learning in my book. Right?

Happy Dyeing , friends.

As Always,

Happy  Stitching and Quilting, y'all

A Sampler for Lois Ann.
I dyed this fabric using a Charcoal Gray which I rinsed pretty quickly out for a light affect.

A Cup of Christmas Cheer- Santa Mug  was dyed with Rit Aquamarine. I then boiled it in a tea bath which gave it a vintage aqua/green look.

It's A Wrap for Blooms for You

"Eeeh!" I squealed in delight when I spotted the little wooden box at the thrift store. I quickly picked it up and twirled around in joyful celebration when I saw that it only cost $1.59. "I have plans for you! ," I exclaimed as I plopped it into my cart.

A few weeks ago I shared a little chart called Blooms for You.

It was a simple stitch with just a few flowers blooming. Well I finished stitching it while on the camping trip, but it has been waiting in the wings to be finished.

Once home I auditioned Blooms for You onto the box. Seeing that the stitch fit for what I had in mind, I was ready to get straight to work.  The box was painted in a wide array of colors. I pulled out several containers of brown paint and got to work. After receiving numerous coats of paint, I let the box dry for a day or two.

Blooms for You was stitched on 14 count tea/ coffee dyed Aida. I trimmed and pressed my stitch before fully finishing it.

STEPS FOR FINISHING BLOOMS FOR YOU

1. I used a dry brush to paint the box . After drying I gently sanded the surface.
2. Trim the stitched piece to the desired size and iron fusible webbing to the back.
3. Cut mat board or cardboard to 4 1/2" x 5" .
4. Cut batting and layer on top of mat board. I tacked mine down with touch of Alene's Tacky glue.
5.  Center the stitched piece to the mat board and fold excess fabric around the edges, lace in place.
6. Center the stitched piece to the wooden box. Using tacky glue , adhere the stitched piece to the box . Place a large book or weight on top until dry.
7. Using tacky glue attach trim to the edge of the stitched piece.
8. Enjoy!

Oooh now don't you think this will make a great seed box?

Have a bright and beautiful day and Happy Stitching!

As Always...

Happy  Stitching and Quilting,

 y'all

Tiny Winter's Day House- Tiny House Freebie Series

Well Hello there , Sweetness. It is "Tiny Tuesday " stitching day for me. I will be working on a simple but quick cross stitch. But first I want to share my latest teeny finish.

It is called Tiny Winter's Day House. This is the first in a new series called Tiny Houses .

I have high hopes to share one each month.  They will all sport the same border and be finished into little pillows.

I am stitching mine on 14 count coffee/ tea dyed Aida and using scraps of fabric for finishing.

If you are interested in stitching this piece,  just grab , the images. For printing tips, refer to the post Tips for Printing which has loads of tips from my sweet friends.

TINY HOUSE FINISHING TUTORIAL

INGREDIENTS- SUPPLIES

🧵 Stitched Tiny Winter's Day House🧵
🧵Finishing and Backing Fabric
🧵 5" strip of 1" lace
🧵 Fusible webbing
🧵thread
🧵Ruler
🧵Scissors
🧵 Stuffing

Supplies gathered for finishing

DIRECTIONS:
1. Trim the cross stitch on each side leaving a 3/4" margin. If stitched on 14 count Aida, your piece will be trimmed to about 3 1/2" x 3 3/4"

Measure and trim cross stitch.

2. Cut finishing fabric to 3 1/2" x 3 3/4".

3. Using 1/4" seam allowance sew the finishing fabric to stitched piece.  Press.

4. Attach lace along seam line. I tack mine at the top and bottom of the piece. Press.
Fixing to add lace.

I pin my lace in place and tack it on the sides.

The lace is attached and ready to be trimmed.

5. Measure your finished piece and make any necessary trims.

Trim and square piece.

6. Cut a backing fabric . I like to cut mine slightly larger for some leeway.

Cut 2 pieces of fusible webbing one for stitched piece and one for backing. Adhere.

Fixing to add fusible and sew into a pillow.

7. Place right sides together and stitch into a pillow form . I leave my opening in the seam line but many stitchers sew their pillow up and poke a little hole in the back and stuff from that area. They then place a pretty patch with fabric or wool to cover the whole.

My pillow form is ready to stuff.

8. Stuff your pillow and sew the hole. Wahlah! The Tin House pillow is done.

Tiny Winter's Day House is complete!

I will be finishing all of my Tiny Houses the same way.

A new Tiny House will debut in February. 💓

The Story of the Scrappy Happy Christmas Trees Quilt

Good afternoon, Sweet Peeps and Happy Friday. Well the sun is peeking out from behind the clouds . It is a beautiful day. I haven't been outside yet to see how cold it is, but it is lovely nonetheless.

The other day, I showed you a peek into my foyer as I dreamed of warmer weather. In my small entryway are 3 old thrifted shutters that I display seasonal quilts on.

Well today I thought I would share one of my favorites which is on display this year- my Scrappy Happy Christmas Trees quilt.  Lots of cheery fabrics in this one! 😀❤💚

I have received so many warm and thoughtful compliments on this little quilt . Thank you for all who noticed it. 🎄❤🤗

Actually , this quilt has a story. In 2018, Mr. Pinker and I were off on one of our usual long camping trips in Oklahoma . We were gone for several weeks . While traversing the beautiful Sooner State, it was raining cats and dogs back home.

Upon our return from Oklahoma, our truck barreled into the driveway around midnight. As we came into the house, we were hit by an odor. "YIKES! What's that ?"I asked.  Little did I know what was in store for us! 😳

Mr. Pinker went downstairs to find that our whole bottom level was flooded and water was running out of the doorway onto the patio. ( My daughter never noticed it when she  checked on the house because she didn't go downstairs, plus it was raining so she did not see what was happening along the doorway. )  Anywhooo... Mr. Pinker discovered that our small hot water heater which was in the kitchen cabinets had burst and hot water had spewed and sprayed for a few weeks . Not only was the bottom level flooded but because it was in the middle of summer with all of  the heat , the walls were covered with mold. It was an ordeal to say the least.  ( Now we cut off our water when we travel unless our kiddos are staying here which they do since then. )

After weeks of drying out with large industrial fans, wrangling with the insurance company and gutting the whole downstairs, we were ready to rebuild that section of the house.  Soooo... where does the quilt come into the story? Well, while Mr. Pinker worked, I sat here watching the workers for a couple of months .

As they stripped the walls, and banged with their hammers, I worked on this little quilt as well as my Scrapberries quilt which I have showed you before.

I have to admit these two projects certainly kept me sane during a stressful time.

Now lets get to the nitty gritty on how I made  Scrappy Happy Christmas Trees.🎄

It is a small quilt just made of scraps and bits that I found in my quilting room.  It is made up of 9 Christmas tree blocks.

I strip pieced the trees in pretty playful, reds and greens.

The background fabric measured 8 1/2" squared  unfinished . I framed each block with 2 1/2"( unfinished) strips. The red trees received green sashing and the green trees received red sashing.

My scrappy jolly trees are hand appliqued.

To create my blocks, I drew out a triangle on a scrap of paper.  The sides measure 6 ", 6" and 5 1/2" roughly. Of course you could use your triangle ruler to create your trees.

Drawing out an isosceles triangle for my tree.

I also drew out a small rectangular trunk.

My applique  tree pattern is drawn out on scrap paper.

Using my scraps, I foundation pieced my trees making sure to press and pin each piece so puckers and wrinkles would not appear.

Don't forget to pin and press when foundation piecing. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Once the foundation paper was covered, I was ready to cut out my tree for applique.

The scraps are all pieces and ready to be cut out into a tree form.

Using my predrawn template, I auditioned the placement of my tree and then used a pencil to draw out my applique lines.

Auditioning where to cut out my tree.

After cutting out the brown trunk, I was ready to pin and needle turn applique my scrappy tree.  Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!

Time to hand applique my scrappy tree.

That is what I will be working on today. A new scrappy tree quilt. I may just work on a few blocks .  Hmmm perhaps for a door quilt.

Yesterday, Jocelyn at Canadian Needle Nana blogspot shared her gorgeous Peppermint Trees quilt. Oh, do hop over to see it. The trees are so delightful and yummy. Jocelyn always has so many fun projects in the works.

Have a great afternoon, Sweeties. Don't forget to sparkle and shine!

 As Always...

Happy  Stitching and Quilting, y'all
