Do you remember these stockings sold in the department stores like Woolworth's long ago?
Photo from Pinterest.
Did we ever get one? Hmmm, I don't think so , but we did have red felt stockings which were placed at the bottom of the tree for Santa to stuff.
On Christmas morning, my sister and I would rush to the tree, and of course discover our stockings stuffed with an orange, crayons and a coloring book. That reminds me... my aunt would gift us underwear - usually Days of the Week undies too. Remember those? EEEK! Not a kids favorite gift but useful nonetheless. Hee! Hee! LOL We really did appreciate our undies , but it is fun to laugh about it.
Raise your hands if you got underwear or socks for Christmas? 😀
Aaw, such warm Christmas memories... 🤗❤
This year I did not hang my girls' stockings on the mantle. Instead I hung a few of my redwork ornies. I wonder if my girls' will notice. I doubt it.
Anywhoo... this brings me to my latest Speaking of Christmas stitch called "The Stockings".
It is all nestled in the little dough bowl with the other pin pillows from the series. I will work on another one this evening.

When I was little Christmas in The Netherlands was not celebrated with presents. We had presents on December 5th, Saint Nicolas.
ReplyDeleteNowadays we have a lots of presents with Saint Nicolas and also a few with Christmas.
Yes, yes and yes I do remember the mesh stockings filled with silly trinkets. I don't recall ever receiving one either, but it didn't stop me from begging for one every year. LOL I'd start begging as soon as they were available at Foster's Five and Dime. My sweet husband had a steadfast rule for Christmas gifts for the kids - no clothes. He called it a "cop out" to put clothes under the tree. That was our responsibility as parents. LOL But I had to sit him down one year and explain that girls enjoyed receiving clothes so he might have to give in a little for the one girl in the family. He finally agreed but it had to be something special. She was thrilled the first time he allowed it to happen because she received a leather jacket. LOL The kids always gave him a pair of socks as a joke. Oh, those were the days.
ReplyDeleteI love this entire series of holiday pillows but I've yet to stitch one. Stockings is my new favorite. LOL
My grandsons are coming over later today to have a pseudo Christmas meal together. And then Christmas Day will be very quiet. That might be a good day to stitch a Christmas little tidbit.
Happy Saturday with a big ole hug, DarleneJ
Oh I do remember those stockings! I can't remember if I ever got one or not. My brother and I would get little toys, chocolate candy coins, a small box of four chocolates (Whitman?). Now-a-days stocking stuffers are pretty expensive - dollar tree items to the rescue! LOL! Did you ever get stockings for your pets? Our kids insisted on it every year though I'm sure the pets couldn't care less - unless there were treats or catnip in the stocking! LOL! Blessings! Oh, and thank you for the new pattern! My Christmas stitching grows and grows! :-)
ReplyDeleteOooh-- I snapped a shot of that Pecan Pie recipe--looks so yummy...and easy-peasy too, Melisa...;)))
ReplyDeleteLove your little stockings charted design--so neat!!
I used to get toffee bars, (my fav still) and crayons and notebooks and chapstick for when I would go ice skating on those cold days..
In the 50's (yup 1950's!!) ice skating was really big in our town--Elizabeth Park used to flood a whole big area for it and they had a "warm-up" shed to get hot cocoa for $.10 cents...talk about long, long ago, right??? Such fun times...boys would try to steal away your long scarves --which, of course is why you wore them hahaha..;))).hugs Julierose
Sweet stocking design, Melisa! I always saw those plastic netted stockings, but we never received one. We had the furry red with white cuff stockings. Actually, we still do! Happy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteThe little stocking counted cross stitching is so cute! Sadly I don't do cross stitching, there are just too many handwork skills to keep us busy. I'll stick with hand quilting and applique. I remember those mesh stockings also and I didn't receive one either. Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteYes we got those red mesh stockings at our Christmas Eve service in our little white Methodist church, always with ribbon candy and an orange or apple in the bottom, what a treasure! I bet your girls do notice the absence of their stockings. My daughter notices things my son would never have a clue about - lol! That is such a cute stocking stitchery. I have my floss and fabric picked out for JOY and need to get started on it!
ReplyDeleteI do remember seeing those stockings but can't remember if I ever got one. You are creating faster than I can stitch my friend, LOL. I haven't had time to stitch on tree farm yet this week. Or I am to tired by the end of the day to do it!! But this stocking one is going on my list for the future;)
ReplyDeletegood morning lovely Melisa.
ReplyDeletei love your newest stitch - The Stockings. it is so adorable. you are soooo creative Melisa. i love it.
your chocolate pecan pie sounds yum yum yummy and so rich. wowza!!! i have printed that recipe and i just may try it. it sounds delightful.
the plastic stockings that are hung on the mantle brought back so many memories of woolworth and TG&Y days. i remember getting the stockings and they looked so wonderful, but when you opened them the goodies inside weren't really all that great. i think they were stuffed with plastic toys and lots of paper for stuffing. i remember that they were pretty expensive at that time as well.
aw memories - aren't they wonderful and you bring back so many for me. you are the sweetest lady. i just love you. you're so creative, talented and wonderful and i appreciate all of the freebies, blog posts, everything you share with us. when i don't hear from you i really worry.
i hope you are feeling better. it's no fun feeling under the weather at Christmastime. i am just about ready. i have two more stops to make and then it is the writing of cards and getting the gifts stuffed into Christmas gift bags. i mostly give my grandbabies clothes and money. nothing fancy, but i enjoy it and so do they. i think they like the money most of all. hee hee
well Melisa i think it's time i let you go and i get a move on for the day. i am so ready to take my little Lola for her walkie this morning. i haven't been on a walk with her for quite some time. she loves walks and today is the day we start back up.
blessings and love are coming your way beautiful lady. a great big squeezy hug is coming along, too. God bless you and your family. how i'd love to be up close and personal with all your lovely hutches and Christmas tree.

A Great addition to the Speaking of Christmas series. The stockings are so cute! Thank you. I think I remember those mesh stockings for kids. The ones I do remember are the mesh stockings for our pets. Both the cats and dogs got them, I remember. That chocolate pie sounds over the top sinful! Yum! LOL Yes, I also got the days of the week undies and I thought they were so grown up and cool.
ReplyDeleteSweet and fun memories! We don't have stockings in France, at least not when I was a kid ;)) We had presents under the tree, toys, dolls, mini model cars (my favorites), but not undies ;) Your mantle looks pretty with your redwork. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I ever got underwear in my stocking at Christmas, but I know there were always socks! They roll up and stuff down in so nicely. Your stocking pin pillow is so cute, Melisa! Love the bowl full of them in your photo. I started the mini Santa sampler last night - will be stitching away on him this week!
ReplyDeleteStocking pattern ist a must to stitch. Beautiful. Here in Germany stockings were not so known when I was a kid. I never got underwear on Christmas. I remember that wishes were fulfilled on Christmas. We had to write a wishlist ti the "Ckristkind" and the to weit. Sweet .memories. Happy holidays,
ReplyDeleteGabi
Those stockings are another super cute stitchery that you created! I received socks, underwear, some nuts (in the shell), a toothbrush, a clementine and a candy cane.--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteAdorable stocking pattern, Melisa, so cute! Stockings are not a tradition in Norway, and as far as I know, not here in Mauritius either. Some may have picked up the tradition from the US. Underwear in the stocking?! Who kid wanted that! lol I did get underwear and socks, but always together with fun gifts. Chocolate pecan pie sound delicious. Have a wonderful Christmas week!
ReplyDeleteI remember the red mesh stockings at Woolworths - my sister and I never got any either. We did receive stocking filled with small surprises (still my favorite part of Christmas day) and usually everything on our letters to Santa. I don't remember getting clothing from Santa, but we each got special "outfits" for every holiday. The German Sweet Chocolate Pecan Pie sounds delicious. I love the stocking pattern and entire the Speaking of Christmas series. I am finishing up the Barnyard Christmas and love it. Thanks for the memories, the pattern, and the visit. Alicia
ReplyDeleteMelisa, WOW, what memories you have brought back to me. I do remember the mesh stockings at Ben Franklins. I do recall whether we got one or not. I do remember the orange and walnuts in the toe of our stockings that we got every year. And of course, socks and underwear- mandatory! My special gift each Christmas every year from my dad, until he passed was a jigsaw puzzle. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMelisa, you've reminded me of an anecdote I'd like to share.
ReplyDeleteI learned the days of the week in English because I was given a set of those panties brought from the US military base in Rota (Cadiz), which is about 150 kilometers from home. 😂😂😂
Christmas is wonderful and full of such happy memories!
Of course, I loved your new shared post. Hugs
I remember those mesh stockings in the stores when I was a kid. We didn't have a tradition of stockings when I was a kid. I was in college when my mother decided to revamp how we celebrated Christmas. She added the stockings and we moved our big Christmas celebration and dinner to Christmas Eve. Which was nice when we all got married, it meant the in-laws got Christmas Day and mom had a whole day to recover before going back to work. Your stockings needlework is really cute.
