I am rolling in high cotton! π
Really, I am with lots of beautiful scenery and quilting to boot ! This weekend I have been admiring a glorious cotton field.
Hello there, Sunshine! Welcome! How are you doing on this lovely summer's day?
Mr. Pinker and I went off on a little excursion for the weekend, and like I said my view has been one of a magnificent cotton field and farm.
I do not know much about cotton, but the plants had white and purple/pink blooms. How pretty! Hmmm do the pinkish flowers turn white as they mature? I don't know, but I sure am curious.
So what does one do while camping near a cotton field in Alabama you ask. Well, I pulled out my Alabama Beauty quilt for some slow summer stitching.
Some of you may remember that I purchased this quilt in 2023 during the World's Longest Yard Sale.
It is hand pieced and was partially hand quilted using a pretty pink thread. So I picked up my needle and thread in 2023 and continued the quilting as the original quilter had started.
Eeeh! About two thirds of the quilt is quilted! I am seeing the light toward a finish. πππ
So what am I going to do when I get home? Hmmm π€ Well, unpack of course, and all of those back home chores, but that's not any fun to speak of is it? I think I will continue working on Alabama Beauty this week and perhaps work on some fall stitching.
Autumn's Pumpkins is in the works. |
Soooo... what do you have in store for the week?
Milk glass, plates and a little creamer are all new thrifty finds from the World's Longest Yard Sale this year. I have to say I was doing the Happy dance.
I love jadeite, but here recently I have been collecting Delphite. Two more saucers to add to my wee collection.
As always,
Happy Stitching and Quilting, y'all

Well, there you are. I had a feeling you and Mr P were off galivanting having a good time. When I was a wee girl, I used to enjoy seSeing all the cotton fields as far as the eye could see. And then the trucks rolling through town with BIG loads of picked by hand cotton. Oh, the memories!!!
ReplyDeleteI love that quilt but the blocks with red are gorgeous. I so wish I could hand quilt. The one thing my grandmother did not teach me how to do. However, I did learn how to comb wool for her quilts. LOL
Very good to see you - enjoy your Sunday!! Other than the Halloween quilt I made a week go I've spent my time x-stitching. Might be time to mix it up a bit. LOL DarleneJ
Happy Sunday, Miz Darlene. Oh yes, hubby and I hit the road for just a few days away. I took along several projects with high hopes on working on each one, but just the quilt saw any love. Aaaw I am so glad those photos brought back some fond childhood memories. I am fascinated by the cotton fields- none is grown in our county so it is interesting to see. Do you have any of your grandmother's quilts? They would be such treasures and so warm made with wool. It sounds like you have had a good week of stitching. I hope to be more productive this week - but we shall see. Hee! Hee! Warm Hugs.
DeleteHiiiii Melisa! ππ» How far are you from Alabama? I used to live in Huntsville and Madison before I moved to Maine. I don’t miss the heat π€ͺ And I used to have cotton patch geese that were bred for weed control in the cotton fields and orchards. πͺΏπͺΏ but I had them to keep the eagles away from my ducks.
ReplyDeleteIs the Autumn pumpkin one of your creations? I'd love to stitch it too π Autumn is my favorite and I loooove pumpkins! My hubby told me I have a bunch of pumpkins growing in my garden...they weren't there when we left for Germany π
Only 2 more days until we go home. We had a great time but I'm ready to be home again and quilt and stitch and work in my garden. π
Hope you are well! Lots of love and hugs,
Alex
Happy Sunday, Alex. It is so good to hear from you and I am so glad that you have had a good time in Germany especially visiting family. Oh how fun that you used to live in Alabama. We do not live far from there at all. We visit Huntsville often. Our daughter used to live there. It is so interesting to hear about cotton patch geese. I did not know geese were good for weed control- learn something new everyday. Oh yes, Autumn's Pumpkins is one of mine. I hope to finish it soon. I am already dreaming of Autumn. How lucky you are to have pumpkins growing in your garden. I had one lone volunteer pumpkin come up in my compost pile. It is just now beginning to turn a little. I wish you safe travels as you make it home, Alex. Do take care. Hugs.
DeleteAlabama Beauty is certainly that for sure, Melisa; quilting it with that pink thread must
ReplyDeletebe a joy! :))) We are having one more day with cooler temps and not much humidity so we will take advantage and do some serious deck-sitting ;))) hugs, Julierose
Oh Julierose, deck sitting sounds so delightful. I do hope you enjoy every minute of it. It has turned hot and humid again here. I have to do my gardening early in the mornings . By evening time the mosquitoes are out. Whew they are vicious! LOL. Thank you so much for the kind compliment on my quilt. It is delightful to quilt with pink thread ( pink is another one of my favorite colors. LOL) Have a blessed week . Hugs.
DeleteThat really is a beautiful field of cotton plants. I grew up around cotton fields, but I couldn't tell you a thing about them. We had hay in our back acreage, and I was all about riding my bike and paid little attention to the fields. If only I could go back in time, I'd explore all of it! What a beautiful find that quilt was, and it's wonderful you are finishing it.
ReplyDeleteI took boo koos of photos of the cotton fields, Linda. They were so beautiful and interesting. I do not know a thing about cotton either. It is not grown near us; I guess that is why I am fascinated with it. LOL. Thank you for the sweet Sunday visit Hugs.
DeleteA nice little get-away! Those are always fun - especially being in someplace you've never been. I've never seen cotton plants close up when they were flowering - so pretty! Your AL Beauty is coming along nicely! We're still here at the campground - now with a broken slide - ugh! Won't get fixed until we get it into a dealer which will be in October. Big UGH! Cross stitching and stash examination today. ;-) Blessings!
ReplyDeleteHi, Donna. Oh my how frustrating to have a broken slide. Will you still be able to travel to get it to the dealer? My in-law's slide would not go in a few weeks ago. Somehow hubby was able to bypass the electronics and get it in. They then had it worked on . This week their air broke down. Whew there is always something isn't there? All went well on our trip. We took along our generator so I could have some air. LOL. The cotton plants were fascinating. The flowers were so pretty. Have a blessed day. Hugs.
DeleteWe have never seen a cotton field in bloom, mostly only seen them after they were picked. We have seen the big bales on the flatbeds going down the highway. I can tell your new xstitch is going to be a fall beauty for sure.
ReplyDeleteI think this was the closest that I have been to cotton plants before they are picked as well. The blooms were gorgeous. I would have never imagined there would be pinkish blooms. Thank you for the sweet Sunday visit, Vicki. Hugs
Deletegood morning beautiful Melisa.
ReplyDeletei love your cotton field photos. it looks like miles and miles of cotton. i have never seen a purple/pink cotton ball, but i would certainly love one. white can sometimes look so boring, but afterall, it is the color of purity. i wonder if a person could grow cotton at their home. just one plant. i'll have to look into that.
i love your alabama beauty quilt. it is so lovely. it's going to look so wonderful in any part of your home. i really enjoy the fact that someone started hand stitching the top and that you continue to hand stitch it through to completion. i wonder what happened to the person who started the stitching. do you think they just got bored? i can't imagine a person ever getting bored with hand stitching. i've never hand stitched a quilt. i have done applique and binding by hand, but never an entire quilt. it is on my "bucket list".
i just knew you were on the longest yard run. i want to go, too. i bet there are so many treasures available for purchase. i love the milk glass and Delphite that you purchased on the run. absolutely beautiful. my sister-in-law collects pink milk glass. it is very beautiful. she has it showcased in a china cabinet. pretty, pretty, pretty!!!
i hope the weather has cooled a little for you. i think you sent the heat to us. it's been horrible and humid, oh my goodness, terrible!!! it's supposed to be cooler this week coming up. i look forward to it.
well Melisa it's time for you to get your afternoon started, I imagine you have already started stitching, quilting, gardening, cooking, and pool swimming.
prayers for a beautiful rest of your Sunday spending time being happy, happy, happy - just as you always are!!!
blessings and love are coming your way. a great, big squeezy hug, too.
Debra Broyles
Good afternoon, sweet Debra. I do hope your day was a beautiful one despite the unbearable heat. Oh my ! Don't you just hate the humidity? It was a scorcher here today. The heat has returned. I knew we would not be so lucky to have continued cooler weather. Oh well what can you do? LOL. Hubby and I made it home late this evening and the grandkids soon arrived and jumped into the pool. I was so tempted, but refrained because I still had unpacking to do. There is always tomorrow for pool time though. LOL. I bet your sister in laws pink milk glass collection is gorgeous! I have always wanted to find a piece but they are few and far between around here. I do have a few pieces of blue though. I was thrilled to pieces when I found the quilt that I am working on . The seller she had bought the quilt like it was and could not decide whether to take it apart or continue quilting it. She decided in the end to get rid of it which was good on my end. LOL. But I too wonder why the quilter stopped quilting it. Well dear Debra, I will let you go. I wish you the most delightful week and I do hope the weather cools soon in your neck of the woods. Sending big hugs and lots of love.
DeleteYour Alabama Beauty is looking fabulous. What pretty blooms on the cotton! This coming week is going to be a busy one and I am thankful for the peace my stitching will bring. Happy Sunday, Melisa!
ReplyDeleteIt is a blessing to have stitching to bring peace, comfort and joy during those busy and stressful times isn't it, Robin. I hope you are able to make a lot of progress on your projects. I am not sure what I am going to work on other than this fall piece. Thank you for the sweet visit. Warm hugs and blessings.
DeleteGood morning! I do have cotton plants (2 right now) in pots. One brown cotton and one white. I spin cotton once in a while. The flowers are so pretty. The brown cotton has yellow flowers. My plants are terribly neglected but that's ok as I don't really need cotton. Many of my generous friends have bigger yards and grow it too so it's always available.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt and seeing how you have your hoop over the edge of the quilts answers one of the questions I had about doing my edge quilting. (Working on my first one.) Thanks for sharing. Love seeing the goodies you find in your travels.
Oh how fascinating, Betty. I did not know you could grow them in pots. I am going to have to research that more. I would love to try my hand at it. I also did not know there were different varieties. Do the plants produce a good amount of cotton? Spinning looks to be a relaxing hobby as well. I have always wanted to learn how to do that as well. One of quilt guild members long ago spins. It is so exciting to hear that you are working on your first quilt. I do hope you are enjoying every stitch. Do keep me posted on your progress. I am self taught so I have always allowed a lot of extra backing fabric and batting . I do not baste but work with the quilt in hand as I go keeping the backing tight. I haven't decided how I am going to quilt the borders on this quilt yet, but I am excited that soon I will have to make that decision. Thank you for the sweet visit and Happy quilting. Hugs.
DeleteThat's a pretty quilt you're quilting, Melisa! I love milk glass - my mom used to have some. I wonder what happened to it. How fun that you found some at the yard sale! I like the looks of your Autumn stitch, too. I'm ready to stitch some pumpkins, but need finish a few other things first!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you so much, Diann. This quilt is such a relaxing one to work on ; it is like quilting through butter- so smooth and easy. My mom collected milk glass years ago and gave me her collection. I have been collecting it ever since. It is nice to add a piece or two every now and then. Have a wonderful week and Happy quilting and stitching . Hugs.
DeleteI don’t know a lot about cotton either. But those flowers are so pretty. Loved this quilt from the first time you showed it. K from NY
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday, K. I had never seen cotton blooms close up before. They were a lovely sight indeed. Oh thank you so much on my quilt. It has been a joy to work on . I feel very fortunate that I was able to find this quilt while yard saling. Last year I bought a quilt top from the same sweet lady. Unfortunately this year, I did not make it down to see her. Thank you for the sweet visit and have a blessed week. Hugs.
DeleteAlabama beauty is looking good. Your thrift finds are also very good looking Sounds like you had a wonderful adventure.
ReplyDeleteAaw thank you so much, Kate. We did have a great weekend. Though it was hot, I was able to find some shade and get a good amount of quilting done which was nice. Have a wonderful week. Hugs.
DeleteWho knew cotton had flowers--not me! They are so pretty and what nice finds at the yard sales, Melisa. I've never heard of Delphite, but is sure is lovely! Your thrifted quilt is looking so wonderful--that's great that you are able to finish it in the style of the original creator! Hope Sunday is filled with things that make you smile :)
ReplyDeleteIt was fascinating to see the blooms. It looked like the plants had 2 different colors of blooms. In the morning the flowers were open , but by evening they would close I guess due to the heat. They were very lovely though. I hope you had a wonderful Sunday, Carol. We had a good day and made our way home by evening time . The grandsons came for a visit which always makes my day. Thank you for the sweet visit. Hugs.
DeleteOh yes! You certainly had a beautiful view with a lovely quilt to stitch on! All of the hand quilters have inspired me to give it a go, so I'm experimenting with my Fields of Fancy BOM. Happy Stitching!
ReplyDeleteOh how exciting, Patricia. I do hope you enjoy the whole process of quilting. The Fields of Fancy BOM sounds like a perfect project. I have never tried quilt as you go. I do look forward to hearing what you think of the whole process. Have a wonderful week and Happy quilting. Hugs.
DeleteQuilting beside a cotton field seems like a perfect activity! Gail at the cozy quilter
ReplyDeleteOh it was, Gail. Fortunately I was able to find some shade beside the camper and enjoy the day with needle in hand. It was a relaxing weekend for sure. Have a blessed week and thank you for the sweet visit. Hugs.
DeleteA lovely view Melisa.I’ve never seen a cotton field, so really interesting to see it.☺️π Great progress on the quilt! I like your tea dyed Aida, mine always looks too plain. Looking forward to seeing the cross stitch finish. Happy Stitching. Hugs, Barbara @flashinscissors π♀️πππ€πxx
ReplyDeleteI like the saying on your small stitchery as for cotton. . .I couldn't believe how thorny the plants are. It must hurt to pick cotton by hand!-TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteSounds like a perfect camping trip to me. We saw lots of cotton fields when I took Mama to Alabama a couple of weeks ago. You are moving right along with quilting Alabama Beauty. It is going to be so pretty when you are finished with it.
ReplyDeleteBeing a northern girl, I didn't have a clue about the colorations of a cotton plant bloom. Here's what Google said - "domestic cotton has a beautiful flower that goes well in the garden. Its blossoms have the interesting ability to open creamy white, fade to pink, and wither to dusky rose, all of the colors visible at once on the same plant." So, there you go. Now we both know. ☺ Quilting on AL Beauty while camping in the same state sounds like the perfect choice. Ooh, Milk glass! I have that compote bowl. Would love to see the pattern of the stack of plates. My Mom's good dishes were Milk glass and so now I have 2 different patterns. The Delphite saucers are such a soft shade of blue. So pretty! Enjoy your wanderings.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the cotton plant blooms. I have seen the plants before and mid harvesting -- there's always a lot of fluffy cotton on the street and the side of the field. Hope you have some more interesting fines on your chosen pottery (or is it china? glass? I don't really know the difference!)
ReplyDeleteAlabama Beauty is a beautiful quilt, Melisa. Your weekend away sounds idyllic.
ReplyDeleteBit by bit, and stitch by stitch, you will soon find you are finished with the Alabama Beauty. Thanks for sharing in Sew & Tell.
ReplyDeleteHow cool that your yard sale find also connected with the location of your trip! Also love that you get to finish what another quilter started, it's going to be a real beauty. Yes, it great to travel but heck to come home and unpack!
