October! October!
There is magic in the name-
A clear sky, a blue sky
And sunsets all aflame...
October ! October!
The hills are all aglow.
With red leaves, With gold leaves,
That dance when the wind blows...

Well since the days seem to fly by when we reach this time of the year, I thought I would give you the holiday countdown !๐ Put blinders on if you do not want to see . Eeeh!
๐30 days until Halloween
๐ฆ54 days until
Thanksgiving
๐
85 days until Christmas.
I have been busy bustling about the house these last few days; taking down some of the Autumn decor and replacing it with Halloween. That includes changing out the quilts.
Last month I told you about gifting my oldest grandson my queen sized bed which was in the guest bedroom. It held several quilts and when I spotted Great Grandma Annie's quilt, I just knew it would be perfect to hang on The Quilt Keeper for the month of October. Such warm oranges and reds.
This quilt is very special. If you have followed me for awhile , you have met my Great Grandma Annie through my stitching and you have even seen her furniture like the buffet which is usually in my header.
You may remember looking through her sewing basket when I shared Grandma Annie's Sewing Basket in July for Needle and Thread Day. And of course she has been in many other stitches.
Great Grandma Annie was the mother of 3 boys and 3 girls one of which passed away as a child. I never met my great grandma, but knowing her children I can imagine how loving and funny she must have been for my grandmother and aunt were a hoot!
Annie was very thrifty as evident by the quilt. The fabrics appear to be feedsacks - perhaps she had used these fabrics to make clothes or aprons and these were the scraps that she strip pieced into lovely Lemoyne Stars. Aren't the fabrics so yummy ?
I do know this quilt was made before 1953 which was when Great Grandma Annie gained her angel wings.
The backing was pieced from white 100 lb chicken scratch feed bags. You can faintly see the print .
Annie quilted the sashing and borders in simple straight lines about 1 1/2" apart and she quilted rays of stitching in the lemonye stars.
The quilting thread was rather thick. I wondered if she used feedsack threads or the threads that she saved from the handle factory to quilt it. ( I will have to show you the crocheted bedspread sometime made from those threads . Wow, it is gorgeous)
I think this quilt is in pretty good condition considering its age. I imagine this quilt kept the chill off my grandmother on those cool October nights.
I think Grandma Annie's binding was unusual. On the sides she turned the red border fabric over to the back but on the top and bottom of the quilt she turned the backing fabric to the front and sewed it down. Quite interesting.

This time I will be sharing Great Grandma Annie with Annie and the gals. Here is a sneaky peek.
So if you have the chance stop in for an afternoon visit. Thank you for the sweet visit and for seeing what I have on The Quilt Keeper. I will be sharing another Tale from the Quilt Keeper in November.
Have a pumpkin spice kind of day ! As always. ..

Dedicated to my baby sister, Amy .A 2nd October without you. My how you enjoyed all that this month offered. I love and miss you Amo.
I don't think we'll ever understand how frugal our great-grandparents and grandparents had to be. I'm sure they'd be appalled by my spendthrift ways even when I think I'm being frugal! Annie's quilt looks lovely in the quilt keeper. My 'keepers' were the first delivery to my 'new to me' house! I got a set of 3, they're hanging now displaying quilts. Happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Gretchen. I was always amazed and fascinated by my grandparents and that includes how frugal they were . They used everything and reused things as well. Some great lessons could be learned by them that is for sure. I hope you are enjoying your keepers as much as I am. Have a great week.
DeleteWhat a lovely family heirloom <3 and sweet that you give it a place of honor. My grandmother made many quilts from feed sacks: scraps from clothes she made for her 7 daughters. I'm blessed to have one of her quilts; a few areas are frayed and I plan to repair it, because I love having it out to use. I hope our ancestors look down and smile that we treasure these things that they made .
ReplyDeleteOh how wonderful that you also have one of your grandmother's quilts to treasure . They are indeed heirlooms . Don't you just love pouring over the fabrics that she used and imagining her days working on it? Thank you so much for the sweet visit and kind comment. Have a blessed week.
DeleteWhat treasures you showcased, Melisa!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you so much, Robin. This is one of my most prized possessions. I know of 2 other quilts that she made that is family owned so I feel quite fortunate.
DeleteI really love your posts and look forward to seeing them. I purchased the quilt keeper through your recommendation and I am very happy with it.
ReplyDeleteAaah thank you so much, Mary Ann . Your sweet visits means the world to me and I am over the moon that you enjoy your time with me. I am so happy that you are enjoying your quilt keeper. I have really enjoyed changing my quilts out seasonally. Have a great week , Mary Ann
