Last year , I shared a post about a beautiful vintage quilt top that I purchased in Texas 2024 that I named "Whitney Lake Stars" . It is a sweet reminder of our vacation in the area.
The quilt has so many beautiful vintage fabrics. One block however has deteriorated .
It is time to patch this quilt up!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Two star rays need to be replaced.
So I searched through my stash and found a vintage reproduction print that I purchased about 15 years ago to repair the block. Did you notice the fabric has Little Red Riding Hood , the wolf and Grandma's House on it-? Too cute!!!
I chose this darling reproduction fabric for patching.
After much thought, I decided not to take the block apart, but to applique over the damaged star points. I began by working with a large piece of the chosen fabric . I pinned one side in place and slowly cut away the fabric as I needleturn appliqued.
Slowly but surely I am finishing the applique on one of the rays.
The applique was not perfect, but I tried my best to follow the lines and points of the "rays of the star" the best I could. One more "ray " to go.
One ray appliqued over . Time to applique over the 2nd damaged ray.
And here is the Four Star block complete. After working, I noticed "DNA" ( a blood stain) on the quilt top probably made from the quiltmaker. LOL. This is a vintage quilt so there is no telling how old that stain is. I tried to get it out with Dawn, but it is set in. So there it will stay. It doesn't bother me though.
Do you see the quiltmaker's DNA ( blood stain) in the peach border? It's there to stay.
Whitney Lake Stars is now mended. It is ready for a good pressing-.
It looks like a stained glass window with the sun shining through.
This quilt top was hand and machine pieced. Today, I will press and then dethread the back. Lots of threads need to be snipped.
Whitney Lake Stars was hand and machine pieced.
Hopefully, by evening's end, I will be marking the quilt for hand quilting. That's my grand plan at least.

Thank you for showing how you repaired the quilt. Beautifully done. So the quilt was only the top layer? Do you finish it off with a back layer and batting?
ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze me. The appliqued piece is perfect, and you'd never know how you 'repaired' it. I was meant to be there. Your hand quilting will look like it belongs. Happy Monday with lots of squishy hugs! DarleneJ
ReplyDeleteThat was the perfect choice of fabric for the fix and your fix looks GREAT!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job. Love the fabric you used.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Melisa.

You did a great job repairing your new star quilt. It's really quite a job, isn't it? I'm in the process of repairing a quilt that I made for my dd that her dog got into. :-o Blessings!
ReplyDeleteA pretty seamless repair. It is a beautiful quilt, so glad you were able to salvage it.
ReplyDeleteLove that you found and bought the quilt top; and now you are bringing the quilt forward. Great repair job...perfect fabric chose. How exciting to get this hooped up and start the hand quilting.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really nice job with that repair, and what a beautiful quilt. I was folding one of Granny's quilts yesterday, and it needs a lot of repair. I hope to get to it all "someday". Have a great week Melisa!
ReplyDeleteGreat repair job on your lovely antique star quilt, Melisa--it looks so nice...;000 hugs, Julierose

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt top, Melisa. The repair job you did is amazing. Well done!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that a sweet one?! I really like how you fixed the wear on that one block - it looks like that fabric was meant to be there. Will you cover the blood stain with a patch, too? Or will it just become part of that quilt's story?
ReplyDeleteUsing an applique' method is a very clever idea, Melisa. You rescue some pretty quilts while traveling.
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job repairing your thrifted quilt, Melisa! I love how our stitching always reminds us of special places, times, and people in our lives :) Hope you have a wonderful week! ♥

DeleteHi I saw a guest on Fons and Porter use denture tablets and a toothbrush to clean blood stains from an old quilt. Perhaps you could look in to that.
ReplyDeleteYour fabric selection looks good and your mending looks excellent. The colors in the quilt are lovely. Mission accomplished. Alicia
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! It does look like stained glass! - Angela
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty, Spring colored quilt top. I repaired a vintage appliqued basket quilt made by my Gr'Aunt for my Aunt & Uncle and did it right over the original fabrics just like you did. Painstaking work but so worth it. The Little Red Riding Hood fabric is so cute. Perfect addition.
ReplyDeleteYour talent and creative is a blessing for all of us to be inspired.
ReplyDeleteHi Melisa, I enjoy reading your blog and have used several of your patterns. I have removed blood with a soak in hydrogen peroxide. There is no damage or fading to the fabric. My youngest daughter is also named Amy and her brothers called her Amo. Keep spreading love and kindness! Hugs, Vonnie
