A Hair Raising Tale

"Get out of there! " texted my daughter after I messaged her as to where we were camped and the unwanted guests who just wheeled into our site and parked mere feet from our door .

Hello, Sweet Friends and welcome. The last time I spoke to you, I was stitching away at our newest campsite which was northwest of Taos overlooking the Rio Grande Gorge.

We had such a lovely view right on the bluff overlooking the river. That evening we were hit by a wind storm. We had to reposition the camper. Once the wind settled, Mr. Pinker headed outdoors while I stayed in with the door  wide open. All of a sudden, I heard Mr. Pinker's voice rise. I peeked out of the door and a vehicle had whipped into our site, drove around our truck and parked with less than 10 feet of our door right there on the bluff! 😲

"What are you doing?" asked Mr. Pinker.

Two young men, sat back in the SUV.  One finally replied -"Chillin' and drinking'" .

Mr. Pinker  politely explained that we were camping and there were plenty of sites around.

The two men eyed Mr. Pinker sizing him up. Meanwhile, I jumped to the bed to grab a little protection .  Hmm- a rotary cutter- No! Scissors? - No!  I better get something else; I thought.

All kinds of thoughts rushed through my head- like being  robbed, stabbed , shot or  thrown off the bluff and what not.  ☹πŸ€ͺ😨😨 Was my mind running wild? Probably, but my stomach ached and you know the old saying- trust your gut!  ( Mind you, other campers were nearby as well as there were  empty campsites, but these fellas'  behavior was a little off. )

The men inquired as to where we were from; of course Mr. Pinker did not tell them. He told them to have a good evening and goodbye.

After what seemed like an eternity, they finally backed up a few feet and sat. They then made their way over to the next site where again they sat but did not get out. Mr. Pinker stayed outside and watched as I manned the window.

After a while, they pulled out , paused at the entrance of our site and then left. With no other place to go, we stayed there for the night and then moved on.

Wheew! What a hair raising experience.πŸ˜–πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜³ The next day, I was tired after a sleepless night, but it was time to mosey  on.

We made our way to the great state of Colorado.

In Salida we stopped for a few supplies and  made our way to  a delightful antique store where I picked up a few pretty treasures/ souvenirsπŸ˜€πŸ˜Š  like...

Some pretty blue fabrics- perfect for a farm quilt I have in mind...

... and a vintage  scoop , doilies and potholders. Oh, be still my heart; I just love handmades. ❤

... and a darling little vintage quilt block pillow. Too stinking cute!

I will use the yellow doily and potholder in my summer bee/ sunflower display.

By night's end, we made our way to our next spot where I was able to relax and get a good night's rest.  We found a peaceful spot.

Have you ever had a hair raising experience while traveling?

As Always,

Happy  Stitching and Quilting, y'all

Melisa

Thank you for the sweet visit.

  2. I'm so sorry that happened to you, Melisa! That would definitely be unsettling. We had something similar happen when we were camping with our kids years ago - I don't even remember the exact thing that happened, but it was some people who pulled up next to us who were kind of scary. So I know how you were feeling. Welcome to Colorado! I hope you're having a great time in Salida - it's a beautiful area. Looks like you found a fun thrifting spot!

  4. Awww Melisa, I'm so sorry, I feel for you. That would make me very uneasy, and you well deserved the stop at the antique place to calm you down! i hope the rest of your trip is just enjoyable and peaceful.

  5. Wow - that can be scary. I sometimes think people do that on purpose. Dh and I were RVing with the grands in New Mexico. One evening, police pulled up to the RV in front of us and behold there was a drug bust going on. It was fairly peaceful, no guns, but we had a front row seat to the whole thing. Praying the rest of your travels are stress free. Blessings!

  6. So glad to hear nothing happened with those strangers - how scary! Years and years ago when my daughters were pretty young we pulled up to a department store to make a return after Christmas and it was icy and dark out and a truck was running parked parallel to the parking spots. As we pulled in to our spot, three men ran out and threw a bag and hammers and a hatchet int he bed of the truck and sped off sliding on the ice - they had just robbed the glass jewelry counter at the entrance to the department store. I tell you what, I reached over the seat and shoved my two daughters down to the floor board as quickly as I could - it was like I became super woman! I was shaking for a few hours after that! I cannot imagine how you felt all night but glad all is well!! Enjoy the rest of your trip - Carrie

  9. Wow, Melisa! I'm so glad you guys were ok and those creeps left you alone finally. At least there were other campers nearby. I'm hoping you have some really good protection. You never know when you will need it. Y'all stay safe and have fun. Hugs. B

  10. Glad you are okay! I have wondered (and worried) about your safety while traveling and camping. Probably more danger from people than the animals out there. Enjoy the rest of your travels!

  12. You never know what can happen in situations like that, that's what makes them so scary. Very pretty fabric finds, that blue is really cute. Hope you are still chilling and relaxing.

  13. Wow! I am so thankful that things didn't escalate any further and you are both safe. What an awful experience. A little thrifting therapy was a big help, I bet. Great finds! Cute blue fabrics and the doilies and potholders are really something. Some of those potholders from that time were definitely meant for pretty, only, cause they sure would be much help with a hot pan. I've always wondered about that.

  16. That was very scary, Melisa. I'm glad they moved on and didn't cause any trouble. We've never had anything like that happen to us while camping and I hope we never do. And, I hope that is the last time you will have that experience. You found some nice treasures at the antique store.
